Seniors Lead Eagles on Day Three of Hawaii Tourney, Extend Win Streak to 16
HONOLULU, Hawaii - Dana Frantz was strong in the circle and Jessica Carter and Cheyenne Jenks drove in 12 runs combined as the Eagles went 2-0 on day three of the Hawaii Tournament.
In the game against Mount St. Mary‘s, Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) powered the Eagles with two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs in a 5-4 win against the Mountaineers for their fifth win against Mount St. Mary’s.
With the Mount holding a 4-3 advantage, FGCU scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the come-from-behind victory. Jenks homered to center to tie the game on a home run with two outs. Samantha Waldron (Plant City, Fla.) then singled up the middle, advanced to second on an error and touched home on Jessica Carter’s (Ocala, Fla.) single up the middle for the decisive run.
Mount St. Mary’s jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first, but the Eagles quickly responded as Jenks cut the deficit to 3-2 on a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.
The Mount added a run in the third to take a 4-2 lead.
Waldron answered for the Eagles with a run in the bottom of the stanza on a sacrifice fly and then scored the decisive run in the bottom of the seventh.
Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picked up the win after pitching 5.0 innings and giving up six hits and striking out four batters.
In game two against Radford, the hot-hitting Eagles handed Radford a 16-6 defeat.
Three big innings and a 17-hit attack keyed FGCU in the win. Cheyenne Jenks was 4-for-4 with two doubles and a home run. She knocked in five and scored four runs for the Eagles.
The Eagles grabbed a 6-0 lead with a run in the first and five more in a five-hit third that highlighted by a two-run double by Jessica Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) and a two-run single by Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio).
Radford pushed two runs across in the bottom of the third, courtesy of two FGSU errors.
After the Eagles countered with two runs in the top of the fourth, the Highlanders cut their deficit to two thanks two a pair of homeruns in the bottom half of the inning.
FGCU closed out the game with four-run fifth and seventh innings.
Freshman Alexis Casey (Pompano Beach, Fla.) got the win in 3.2 innings of work. She held Radford scoreless on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
