BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The No. 19 FGCU Softball team gave up 14 runs in two games as the Camels swept the Eagles in A-Sun doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon. The consecutive losses are the first time all season that FGCU has experienced a two-game losing streak.

In game one, the Eagles were held to four hits and no runs in seven innings, marking only the second time all season that FGCU has been held scoreless. Cat McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla.) picked up the loss, which was her first in 20 decisions this season. McDaniel allowed all seven runs (three earned) in her innings worked.

The Camels were able to score all seven of their runs all in the fifth inning. After McDaniel rung up the first batter to start the frame, Taylor McGee got the Camels on the board with her solo homerun to centerfield. After another strikeout the Camel offense went on to score six more runs.

The best opportunity to score for the Eagles came in the third inning as Lauran Ziegler (Palm Bay, Fla.) singled through the right side on a one-out single. She was called out on a fielder’s choice that allowed Jessica Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) to reach. Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) then stepped into the batters box, but struck out on three straight pitches.

In game two, CU started the scoring in the first inning but FGCU was able to answer with a run of its own in the top of the second. Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla.) reached on a fielder’s choice and came in to score on Jessica Carter’s (Ocala, Fla.) double.

The Camels tallied two runs in the bottom of the second. Keeli Michael singled and moved all the way to third on Robin Leathers’ double. Katie Hinton then hit a single up the middle to score Michael and Leathers for the second and third runs of the game for the Camels.

The Eagles responded with a run of their own in the top of the third as Paez’s single drove in Jessica Gray (Naples, Fla.) to cut the CU lead to 3-2.

The Campbell offense went on to plate two more runs in the third inning pushing their lead to 5-2.

The score remained 5-2 until the fifth when FGCU exploded for four runs. Ziegler started the rally with a bunt single. Gary then reached on an infield single. A Paez single loaded the bases for Jenks, who was walked. Samantha Waldron (Plant City, Fla.) then reached on fielder’s choice in which Gary was thrown out at the plate. Platt then came up with a single through the right side to score Paez, but Jenks was out at the plate attempting to score on a throw from rightfielder Hilary Wheatley. A fielding error by the CU shortstop off a grounder from Carter allowed Waldron to score. Lindsey Green (Bowling Green, Ky.) followed with a single to right centerfield to score Platt. Campbell then brought in a reliever, Katie Woodcock, and got the final out to end the inning.

The FGCU lead stayed at 6-5 until the bottom of the seventh. The Campbell seventh inning rally started with Katie Hinton getting bit by a Cassidy Rash (Crystal River, Fla.) pitch. Karlie Love then followed with a single through the right side. A fielding error allowed Love to take second and moved Hinton to third. After Lizzie Goldbach was inserted to pinch-run for Love, Christina Melton was walked to load the bases and bring up Brittany Stanley. Stanley knocked the first pitch up the middle to score Hinton and Goldbach to give the Camels the comeback 7-6 victory.

The loss went to Rash (7-2), who allowed both runs in the seventh inning.

The Eagles now return home to play the final three doubleheaders at the FGCU Softbball Complex. FGCU hosts Stetson (4/21), Belmont (4/23), and Lipscomb (4/25) to wrap up the season as they look to win their second consecutive A-Sun Regular Season Championship.
