Eagles Set to Host FGCU Spring Break Invitational

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team will host the annual FGCU Spring Break Invitational this weekend, with games beginning on Thursday (Feb. 25) and running through Sunday (Feb. 28). This year’s tournament field includes Minnesota, Connecticut, Villanova, Georgia Southern, Eastern Michigan, St. Francis (PA), and FGCU. The first game features the Eagles against Minnesota on Thursday night at 6 p.m.

FGCU (2-6) comes into the tournament having lost all four games at the Blue and Gold Felsburg Memorial Tournament at FIU last weekend. Two of the games went to extra innings, with the Eagles falling to Wisconsin 5-4 in eight innings, and losing to the host Golden Panthers 6-5 in eight innings. The Blue and Green also lost to Bethune-Cookman, 3-1, and Long Island, 4-1.

Courtney Platt (Greenville, Ohio) leads the Eagles with a .450 batting average, in addition to a home run and four RBIs. Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.) has been FGCU’s biggest power threat, with three home runs and an .880 slugging percentage. Gary also leads the team with seven RBIs and is hitting .400 on the season.

The Georgia Southern Eagles come in to the tournament with a 2-3 record, picking up victories over Oakland and Binghamton in the Georgia Southern Eagle Classic last weekend. Minnesota comes in at 4-7, after losing four of five games at the Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic last weekend. Villanova owns a record of 2-3 after defeating South Carolina and UNF at last weekend’s UCF Invitational.

St. Francis (PA) enters the tournament with a 1-4 record, defeating Toledo in eight innings before losing four straight at the First Pitch Classic hosted by UNC Charlotte. The Connecticut Huskies and Eastern Michigan Eagles will be playing their first games of the 2010 season this weekend.

The Eagles will be playing one game each day during the four-day, 17-game tournament. FGCU takes on Minnesota at 6 p.m. on Thursday to kick off the tournament and will battle St. Francis (PA) on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the tournament finale. Friday the Eagles play Connecticut at 6 p.m. and Saturday the Blue and Green clash with Villanova at 6 p.m. All tournament games will be held at the FGCU Softball Complex.
