FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fresh off of a 3-1 performance at the FGCU Spring Break Invitational, the FGCU softball team will host three games this week. The Eagles will play a doubleheader against Eastern Michigan on Tuesday (Mar. 2) before taking on Western Michigan in a single game on Thursday (Mar. 4).
After a hard-fought 3-2 loss to Minnesota in the opening game of the FGCU Spring Break Invitational, the Eagles (5-7) rattled off three straight wins to earn second place in the seven-team tournament. A sixth-inning RBI triple off the bat of Hayley O’Mara lifted the Blue and Green to a 5-3 win over UConn on Friday night. After rain postponed FGCU’s game on Saturday, the Eagles played two games on Sunday. A strong pitching performance by Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla.) led FGCU to a 2-1 win over St. Francis, and a sixth-inning home run from Courtney Platt (Greenville, Ohio) solidified a 6-3 victory over Villanova to cap the weekend for the Eagles.
Eastern Michigan (3-2) opened their season at the FGCU Spring Break Invitational, though they did not face FGCU. The Eagles of Eastern Michigan defeated Villanova twice, 13-5 on Friday and 3-2 on Sunday. EMU also defeated tournament champion Georgia Southern, 8-7. The Eagles two losses came to St. Francis, 3-1, and Minnesota, 4-0, in a rain-shortened 5-inning game.
Western Michigan (1-4) kicked off the 2010 season at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., where they finished with a 1-4 record. After starting the tournament with a 21-16 win over Ole Miss, the Broncos lost to No. 4 Arizona, Kentucky, No. 11 California, and Oregon. WMU will play Maine in Plant City, Fla., on Wednesday, before traveling to Fort Myers on Thursday.
Game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader against Eastern Michigan is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. First pitch for Thursday’s single game against Western Michigan is slated for 4 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.
