Eagles Ready for USF Under Armour Invitational

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team will travel to Clearwater, Fla., for this weekend's Under Armour Invitational hosted by the University of South Florida. The Eagles will take on Penn State, Fordham, Austin Peay, Villanova, and St. Joseph’s during the tournament.

FGCU comes into the tournament with a 7-8 record after defeating Western Michigan 4-3 in extra innings on Thursday afternoon. Erin Olson (Naples, Fla.) delivered the walk-off game-winning hit, a double that scored Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla.) in the bottom of the ninth.

The Blue and Green are led offensively by junior Courtney Platt (Greenville, Ohio), who comes into the tournament with a .375 batting average, three home runs, and nine RBIs. Lauran Ziegler (Palm Bay, Fla.) has served as a solid table-setter for the Eagles, leading the team with 18 hits (.367 average) and 13 runs scored. As a team, FGCU has hit 10 home runs while allowing none.

In the circle, Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla.) has posted a 3-5 record with a team-best 2.17 ERA, while Kelci Breaux (Okeechobee, Fla.) is 3-3 with a 3.75 ERA in her first season at FGCU.

The Eagles will play Penn State (9-4) on Friday night at 6 p.m. before taking on Fordham (6-3) at 8 p.m. that night. Saturday, FGCU faces off against Austin Peay (3-9) at 3 p.m. and Villanova (3-7) at 5 p.m. The Blue and Green wrap up the tournament against St. Joseph’s (2-2) on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
