CLEARWATER, Fla. – After scoring 25 runs in two games on Saturday, the FGCU softball team could muster only four hits against St. Joseph’s, falling 4-0 to wrap up the Under Armour Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 9-11 on the season.
Stephanie Sullivan (Venice, Fla.) started in the circle, taking the loss to fall to 2-2 on the season. Sullivan pitched four innings, allowing four runs on six hits, walking two and striking out one. Kelci Breaux (Okeechobee, Fla.) came on and pitched two solid shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit and recording one strikeout.
The Eagles had a good chance to score in the top of the first, but Hayley O’Mara (Naples, Fla.) grounded out, leaving runners on first and third. That would be the last time FGCU would get a runner as far as third base.
St. Joseph’s (6-3) manufactured a run in the bottom of the first, starting with a leadoff single from Dana Parks. Parks advanced to second on an illegal pitch, and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Monica Aguilar drove the run in with a sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The bottom of the fourth would see St. Joseph’s extend the lead to 4-0, as they sent eight batters to the plate. Two singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with nobody out, and an unsuccessful fielder’s choice allowed the first run to score. After the next batter walked, scoring another run, Parks reached on infield single, scoring the third run of the inning. Sullivan was able to escape further damage, getting Laura Cardone to foul out and Aguilar to line into a double play.
St. Joseph’s starter Erin Gallagher kept the Eagles’ offense grounded for the remainder of the game, allowing just one hit and one walk over the final three innings.
Lauran Ziegler (Palm Bay, Fla.) picked up half of FGCU’s hits, finishing the game 2-for-3.
The Eagles land back at home on Wednesday (Mar. 10) when they will open up A-Sun play with a doubleheader against Kennesaw State. First pitch for game one is set for 5 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.
