Stetson Slips Past Eagles
DELAND, Fla. – The FGCU softball team lost a pair of close games against Stetson on Sunday (Apr. 11) at the Patricia Wilson Softball Complex in DeLand, Fla. The Eagles lost game one, 4-0, before falling in the second game, 4-2. Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla.) hit her fifth home run of the season in game two.
With the losses, the Eagles fall to 20-26 on the season, 8-6 in the A-Sun. Stetson improves to 24-17 overall, 6-4 in conference play.
The Hatters opened the scoring early in game one, using a pair of base hits after a leadoff walk to plate the first run of the game. Stetson held a 1-0 lead after the first inning and continued to lead 1-0 until the sixth inning.
Back-to-back two-out RBI doubles extended Stetson’s lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning. The Hatters would add another run on an error, and Stetson would hold on to win game one, 4-0.
The Eagles couldn’t get the offense going against Amanda Lindsey, who pitched five innings of relief for the win. FGCU collected just four hits in the first game.
Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla.) took the loss to fall to 9-12 on the year. McDaniel pitched a six-inning complete game, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, walking one and striking out six.
In game two, the Blue and Green jumped out in front with a run in the top of the first. Lauran Ziegler (Palm Bay, Fla.) reached on a dropped third strike to open the game, and Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.) followed by reaching on a fielding error by shortstop Chelsey Trotto. When Trotto threw errantly towards first base, both Ziegler and Gary advanced a base, setting up runners on second and third with nobody out. After Ziegler was thrown out at the plate on a fielder’s choice, Hayley O’Mara (Naples, Fla.) laced a single to right, scoring Gary. Courtney Platt (Greenville, Ohio) also tried to score on the play, but was thrown out at home.
The Hatters answered back with a three run third inning, taking a 3-1 lead. All three runs were unearned and scored with two outs. The first run scored on when O’Mara dropped a throw that would have ended the inning. The next batter, Katie Lawrence, singled to right, scoring two more runs.
FGCU got one of those runs back the next inning, when Fernandez stepped up and launched a home run over the right center field wall to lead off the fourth.
Lawrence singled home another run for the Hatters in the fifth inning, giving Stetson a two run lead (4-2) once again. The Hatters would go on to win game two by the score of 4-2.
Kelci Breaux (Okeechobee, Fla.) took the loss, dropping to 7-8 on the season. Breaux pitched five innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits, striking out three and walking none.
Ziegler, O’Mara, and Fernandez pick up two hits apiece. O’Mara and Fernandez each drove in one run and Fernandez scored once as well.
The Eagles will travel to Nashville, Tenn. next weekend to wrap up the road portion of the 2010 season. FGCU will take on Belmont in a doubleheader on Friday, April 16, beginning at 2 p.m. On Saturday, April 17, the Blue and Green will visit Lipscomb in a doubleheader that is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
