FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team will close out the road portion of the 2010 season with a pair of A-Sun doubleheaders in Nashville, Tenn. this weekend. The Eagles will open the weekend with a pair of games at Belmont on Friday (Apr. 16) beginning at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader at Lipscomb on Saturday (Apr. 17) beginning at 1 p.m.
The Blue and Green currently sit in fifth place in the Atlantic Sun, owning an overall record of 20-26 and a conference mark of 8-6. Last time out the Eagles were swept at Stetson, losing 4-0 and 4-2 on Sunday, Apr. 11. Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla.) hit her fifth home run of the season in game two of the doubleheader.
Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.) and Courtney Platt (Greenville, Ohio) continue to lead the offense for the Eagles. Gary leads the team with a .364 average, 36 runs scored, and 83 total bases. Gary ranks fifth in the conference in batting average and second in runs scored and total bases. Platt leads the Eagles in home runs (9), RBI (30), walks (36), slugging percentage (.636), and on-base percentage (.481). Platt ranks in the top three in the A-Sun in all of those categories, including the conference lead in walks.
Belmont (7-35, 3-9 A-Sun) is tied for last place in the conference standings, having been outscored 288-101 on the season. The Bruins were swept by Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday (Apr. 13), falling 8-0 in five innings in game one and 2-1 in the second game. Ashley Byers leads the team in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.268), hits (30), runs scored (15), home runs (8), RBI (27), slugging percentage (.500), total bases (56), walks (22), and on-base percentage (.388).
Lipscomb (33-9, 10-2) sits on top of the A-Sun standings, holding a two-game lead over second-place UNF. The Lady Bisons have outscored their opponents 221-66 on the season. Last weekend, Lipscomb split doubleheaders at Mercer and Kennesaw State, picking up their first two conference losses of the season. Abby Keese leads the conference in batting average (.383), home runs (10), and total bases (88). Kellie Sirus leads the A-Sun in slugging percentage (.702) and runs scored (38), and is tied for second in home runs (9). Whitney Kiihnl owns a 22-2 record in the circle, leading the Atlantic Sun in ERA (0.66) and opponents’ batting average (.095). Kiihnl is also hitting .379 at the plate this season.
