FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team looks to improve on its opening home weekend as it hosts the Moe’s Blue and Green Invite beginning on Friday at the FGCU Softball Complex. Albany, Eastern Michigan, Iowa, Southern Illinois, St. Francis and UMBC all travel south to take part in the three-day tournament.

FGCU (3-7) plays Big Ten foe Iowa on Friday before competing against Southern Illinois on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m. The Eagles close out the tournament against Albany (1:30 p.m.) and St. Francis (6:00 p.m.) on Sunday.

Led by freshman Brittney Garabedian’s (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) pair of doubles, home run and three RBI, the Eagles had seven extra-base hits for the second weekend in a row at last weekend’s Homewood Suites/Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Tournament. Classmate Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City) also added three RBI, recording a triple and earning four walks at the tournament.

Sophomore Stephanie Sullivan (Venice, Fla./Venice) (2-1) boasts the team’s best ERA with a 0.98. She has given up three runs in 21.1 innings of work, while striking out nine. Redshirt senior Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) (1-3) leads the team with 18 strikeouts while walking only four in 25.1 innings.

This weekend will mark the first meeting between the Eagles and Iowa, Southern Illinois and Albany for the first time. FGCU owns a 4-0 record against St. Francis, last defeating the Red Flash, 2-1, in the FGCU Spring Break Tournament on February 28, 2010.

FGCU owns a 179-33 (.844) record at the FGCU Softball Complex since it opened in 2004. The Eagles also boast a 42-10 record in tournaments that are hosted at their home field. FGCU will host the Stevens Industries FGCU Tournament from March 4-6 before going on a six-game road trip in Arizona.

Tickets for the Homewood Suites/Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Tournament can be purchased through the FGCU Ticket Office in Alico Arena either in person or by phone at (239) 590-7145. Tickets are also available at www.FGCUathletics.com/tickets. All Tournament passes, valid for all games during the tournament, will be $10 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 3-18). FGCU students, faculty and staff get in free of charge with an Eagle ID.

The ticket office is also running a Grand Slam special which includes four games for $12. Packages purchased for softball are good for any games through March 2.

FGCU will also be running the “Diamond Dollars” promotion throughout the entire season, which current students are eligible for. Students attending the game will be entered to win $100 if an FGCU player hits the SIP sign on the outfield wall in the air or hits a homerun over the sign. If the game finishes without a winner, the money rolls over to the next game continuing to increase the pot. Winners must have a valid FGCU student ID and be present to win.
