FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team could not overcome Southern Illinois’ seven-run first inning as it fell, 7-1, in its second game of the Moe’s Blue and Green Invite on Saturday night at the FGCU Softball Complex.
With the loss, FGCU falls to 3-9 on the season, while Southern Illinois improves to 9-3 with a perfect 4-0 record in the tournament.
Southern Illinois got on the board quick in the first inning as it capitalized on five Eagle errors and three hits of its own to lead 7-0. With two on and no outs, FGCU defense settled down and got the last three Salukis in a row.
Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when redshirt sophomore Lindsey Green (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood) fired a solo-shot off the scoreboard in left field to put the Eagles on the board, 7-1.
Unfortunately, that would be all the FGCU offense could muster as it registered just four hits, leaving nine runners stranded. The Blue and Green were also plagued on the defensive end as they amassed six errors on the night.
Eagle starter sophomore Stephanie Sullivan (Venice, Fla./Venice) (2-2) took the loss, giving up seven unearned runs off six hits, and six walks, while fanning two in five innings of work. Senior Kelci Breaux (Okeechobee, Fla./Brevard CC) pitched two innings in relief, allowing one hits and striking one out.
FGCU closes out the tournament against Albany (1:30 p.m.) and St. Francis (6 p.m.) on Sunday.
