FORT MYERS, Fla.
– The FGCU softball team closes out its 16-game home stand as hosts to the Stevens Industries FGCU Tournament beginning on Friday, March 4. The Eagles play St. Francis (4:45 p.m.) and UT-Martin (7 p.m.) on Friday before facing Colgate (6 p.m.) and Dartmouth (8:15 p.m.) on Saturday. A game against the BIG EAST’S St. John’s closes out the tournament at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
FGCU (5-11) is coming off two losses to Eastern Michigan on Wednesday night. After overcoming a three-run deficit, the Eagles fell, 4-3, in the first game after before dropping game two, 4-0.
This weekend will mark the first meeting between the Eagles and UT-Martin. FGCU owns a 5-0 record against St. Francis, last defeating the Red Flash, 12-0, last weekend. The Eagles also own a 4-0 record against the Ivy League’s Dartmouth, winning the last meeting on February 23, 2010, 5-0. Holding a 1-0 edge over both Colgate and St. John’s, the teams last met in the 2009 season. FGCU beat St. John’s, 14-4 (5), on February 14 before defeating Colgate, 8-0 (6), on February 27.
Freshman Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) leads the team with a .310 average, while senior Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) is second on the team with a .278 average and has a team-high 16 walks. Freshman Jessica Barnes (Winter Park, Fla./Haines City) leads the team with six extra-base hits including two home runs.
With a 2-5 record, redshirt senior Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./State College of Florida) tops the team with 28 strikeouts and a 1.94 ERA.
Tickets for the Stevens Industries FGCU Tournament can be purchased through the FGCU Ticket Office in Alico Arena either in person or by phone at (239) 590-7145. Tickets are also available at www.FGCUathletics.com/tickets. All Tournament passes, valid for all games during the tournament, will be $10 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 3-18). FGCU students, faculty and staff get in free of charge with an Eagle ID.
Current students attending the games will be eligible to win $800 if an FGCU player hits the Self Insured Plans (SIP) sign on the outfield wall in the air or hits a ball over the sign. FGCU will be running this “Diamond Dollars” promotion throughout the entire season. If the game finishes without a winner, the money rolls over to the next day continuing to increase the pot by $100 each day. Winners must have a valid FGCU student ID and be present to win.
