FORT MYERS, Fla. – After ending the weekend on a three-game winning streak and the Stevens Industries FGCU Tournament title, the FGCU softball team heads west to play No. 7 Arizona State on Wednesday at 9 p.m. at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
Currently on a three-game winning streak for the first time this season, FGCU takes its 9-12 overall record on the road after a 15-game homestand, which included three tournaments and a doubleheader against Eastern Michigan. Holding a 17-1 record, the Sun Devils are on a 13-game winning streak.
Freshman Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) is the Eagles’ top offensive player with a .339 average, including a team-leading 19 hits and four home runs. Senior Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) is second on the team with a .314 average and a conference-best 19 walks. Reigning Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, freshman Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony) has a team-high 13 RBI and is tied for second on the team with three home runs and 12 walks.
Redshirt senior Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) (3-9) leads the team with a 1.44 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 58.1 innings.
Arizona State is ranked seventh in the Ultimate College Softball and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 polls, and eighth in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 25 poll.
The Sun Devils boast five players batting above .400, led by junior Katelyn Boyd’s .500 batting average. Boyd has a team-leading six home runs with 20 RBI on 23 hits. Freshman Dallas Escobedo (10-0) is the team’s top pitcher with a 1.06 ERA giving up just eight earned runs on the season.
It will be the first meeting between the two teams who will play again on Thursday at 9 p.m. as part of the Diamond Devil Tournament. FGCU holds a 1-0 record against Pac-10 schools, last playing Oregon State in the Hawaii Malihini Tournament on March 5, 2009, winning 2-1. FGCU is also 3-4 against ranked team since joining Division I in 2008.
