TEMPE, Ariz. – The FGCU softball team overcame a two-run deficit to defeat Howard, 3-2, in its second game of the day at the Diamond Devil Tournament at Farrington Stadium on Friday evening.
With the win, FGCU moves to 11-15 on the season, while Howard slips to 3-9. The Eagles end the tournament against Weber State at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
In the second game of the day, Howard scored two runs in the first inning on three hits. Christine Sborz led off with a double to left field before Lorae Robinson singled to the same side, putting runners on first and third. Robinson stole second before a sacrifice fly brought Sborz home. A ground out moved Robinson to the corner and then scored on a single to plate another run for a 2-0 lead.
The Bison held FGCU without a hit until the bottom of the third when the Eagles scored three runs on two hits. Redshirt sophomore Kayla Gabel (Lakeland, Fla./State College of Florida) led off with a single and senior Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) earned a walk to put runners on first and second. Freshman Jessica Barnes (Winter Park, Fla./Haines City) hit a single to center field to load the bases, but a Howard miscue proved costly as each runner scored. Barnes earned an RBI on Gabel’s run, but the error gave Platt and Barnes enough time to motor around the bases for a one-run lead, 3-0, which it held preserved for the win.
Howard was unable to regain the lead as senior pitcher Kelci Breaux (Okeechobee, Fla./Brevard CC) and the Eagles’ defense gave up just two hits over the next four innings to secure the win.
Breaux (2-4) earned the win, giving up eight hits and two runs, while fanning six in seven innings. Samantha Gaston took the loss, surrendering one earned run on three hits and six walks, while tossing seven strikeouts.
