TEMPE, Ariz. – Freshman Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) fired a walk-off home run to lead the FGCU softball team past Weber State, 6-4, in its final game of the Diamond Devil Tournament at Farrington Stadium on Saturday morning.
With the win, FGCU ends its Arizona trip with a 3-3 record to improve to 12-15 overall on the season, while Weber State drops to 3-8.
With two outs and the score tied at 4-4, Bembnowski had a two-RBI shot over the left field wall, her second of the season, to win the game for the Eagles. She scored redshirt sophomore Lindsey Green (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood) who reached on a walk.
In the fifth inning, Weber State tied the game for the second time on Shaila Rivers’ solo shot to right field.
FGCU got its initial lead on a three-run first inning on two hits. Platt and Garabedian earned back-to-back walks to put runners on. Platt advanced to third on a fly out and then scored on sophomore Mariah Fernández’ (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers) single up the middle. With runners on second and third, freshman Jessica Barnes (Winter Park, Fla./Haines City) hit a double down the left line to score both runs for the 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, Weber State tied it, 3-3, on Britnie Hardine’s three-run shot to left center.
Redshirt senior Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) (5-7) earned the win, giving up six hits, four runs and no walks, while striking out five in seven innings. Hardine had 11 strikeouts, but got the loss in six innings as she surrendered four hits, three walks and two earned runs.
FGCU takes the field again against Buffalo and Purdue on Wednesday, March 16 at the FGCU Softball Complex. The Eagles take on the Bulls at 4:45 p.m. before playing the Boilermakers at 7 p.m.
