FGCU Heads to USF The Game Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team concludes its tournament circuit at the USF The Game Tournament beginning on Friday against Winthrop at 5:30 p.m. and Dartmouth at 8 p.m. at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla.

The Eagles continue the tournament on Saturday against No. 18 Oklahoma State at 12:30 p.m. before playing Quinnipiac at 5:30 p.m. A meeting with MAC opponent Kent State at noon on Sunday closes out the Blue and Green’s tournament schedule.

FGCU is coming off a two-team doubleheader split on Wednesday night. The Eagles extended their winning streak to three, shutting out Buffalo, 4-0, before falling to Purdue, 3-2, to own a 13-16 record overall including a 5-4 neutral site record.

Senior Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) went 2-for-3 on Wednesday, in addition to four walks, to back up her team-leading .324 average on the season. Platt has team-bests in doubles (5), runs scored (20) and on-base percentage (.548), while boasting a conference-best 30 walks. Freshman Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) leads the team with 48 total bases and seven home runs, posting a .296 average and 15 RBI with a .593 slugging percentage.

The Eagles’ top pitcher, redshirt senior Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) holds a 5-8 mark with a 2.00 ERA that includes 53 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .248 in 80.1 innings of work. Senior Kelci Breaux (Okeechobee, Fla./Brevard CC) (3-4) is currently on a two-game winning streak, fanning 10 while only giving up two runs in those games.

Chelsey Schoenfeldt tops Winthrop’s (6-14) offense with a .340 average, while posting team-bests in hits (17) and doubles (4). Natalie Becker anchors the pitching staff with 14 appearances, going 3-7 with a 2.88 ERA, while recording 62 strikeouts in 51 innings.

Dartmouth (2-3) returns to the field after opening its season two weeks ago at FGCU’s Steven’s Industries Tournament. Audrey Kolodziej leads the team with a .438 batting average with seven hits in 16 at bats. Hillary Barker has started three games for the Big Green, going 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA. She's pitched 18 innings and struck out 11 batters.

Alysia Hamilton leads Oklahoma State (20-6) with a .430 average on 34 hits including seven doubles and four home runs. Mariah Gearhart also boasts an average over .400, batting .412 with team-bests in runs scored (30), on-base percentage (.539) and stolen bases (21). The Cowgirls’ ace, Kat Espinosa has a 10-2 record with a 1.49 ERA, recording 74 strikeouts in 79.2 innings pitched.

Quinnipiac (9-10) is coming off a 2-1 win over Boston University on Wednesday. Jacqueline Ristow leads the team with a .317 average on a team-best 19 hits and 22 total bases. Heather Schwartzburg is the Bobcats top pitcher, with a 1.68 ERA and a 5-4 record in 11 appearances. She has 87 strikeouts in 66.2 innings.

This weekend marks the first meetings between FGCU and Quinnipiac, Kent State and Winthrop. FGCU has won the previous five meetings with Dartmouth, including a 6-2 victory this year on March 5. Oklahoma State owns a 1-0 record against the Eagles, as the then-No. 18 Cowgirls downed FGCU, 6-2, at the USF The Game Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. last season.
