FORT MYERS, Fla. – After picking up four wins over the weekend and winning seven of its last nine games, the FGCU softball team looks to carry its momentum into Atlantic Sun play as it travels to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on Campbell for a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
FGCU went 4-1 at The Game Tournament in Clearwater, Fla., dropping its only contest to No. 18 Oklahoma State to own a 17-17 record heading into conference action. The Camels opened their week with splits against Charleston Southern and North Carolina, holding a 16-15 mark on the season, while posting a 2-0 A-Sun record after sweeping Mercer last weekend.
FGCU is 6-0 in conference openers, including a 4-0 mark in A-Sun road openers. FGCU holds an all-time mark of 43-19 against A-Sun opponents. The Eagles lead the all-time series 4-2 although neither school has lost a home game in the fourth and final year of the conference series. In last year’s meeting at the FGCU Softball Complex, the Blue and Green won both games against Campbell, 7-5 and 7-2.
Senior Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) leads the offensive attack for FGCU with a .378 average, 31 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 15 RBI. Currently on a six-game hitting streak, she has also has a conference-bests in walks (34) and on-base percentage (.574). Freshman Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) is tied for the conference lead with seven home runs, while posting a .268 average with 15 RBI. Freshman Jessica Barnes (Winter Park, Fla./Haines City) leads the team with 18 RBI on the season.
Redshirt senior Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) has won seven games and thrown 10 complete games with two shutouts in 94.1 innings. Her 1.78 ERA includes 60 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .234. Senior Kelci Breaux (Okeechobee, Fla./Brevard CC) (5-5) struck out a career-high 14 batters in the complete game shutout against Dartmouth over the weekend and also earned a shutout against Buffalo.
The Camels are led by Keeli Michael on the offense and Katie Woodcock in the circle. Michael owns a .340 average and leads the team with 33 hits including 10 doubles. Woodcock (5-1) has a 1.42 ERA with a team-high 56 strike outs in 59.1 innings in her 20 appearances. She has only given up 12 earned runs and holds opponents to a .245 average.
