FGCU Hosts FIU in Mid-Week Doubleheader

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After opening Atlantic Sun play with a sweep of Campbell last weekend, the FGCU softball team turns its attention to FIU for its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.

Currently on a four-game winning streak, FGCU is now 19-17 and has won nine out of its last 11 games. FIU moved its mark above .500 to 17-15 after going 2-1 against Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas over the weekend.

FGCU and FIU have met eight times, with the Panthers holding a 5-3 edge. In 2010, FIU won the first meeting 6-5 in eight innings, before the squads split their doubleheader. FGCU won game one, 10-4, before FIU shutout the Eagles, 4-0, in game two.

Senior Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) continues to lead the team in many offensive categories including her .389 average. She tops the teams in hits (35), doubles (11), runs scored (28) and slugging percentage (.656), while leading the A-Sun in walks (34) and on-base percentage (.569).

Redshirt senior Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) continues her strong season in the circle with a 1.73 ERA and 65 strike outs. McDaniel has an 8-8 record in 16 appearances, including 15 starts, 11 complete games and two shutouts. Senior Kelci Breaux (Okeechobee, Fla./Brevard CC) (6-5) has won five out of her last six games including two complete game shutouts. She has a 3.61 ERA in 64 innings of work, recording 59 strikeouts in 17 appearances.

An NCAA contender in 2010, FIU is coming off a 2-1 conference weekend against North Texas. Junior Ashley McClain leads FIU both offensively and defensively. At the plate she is hitting at a team-leading clip of .430 and owns additional team-bests of 40 hits, 31 RBI, nine doubles, five home runs and 66 total bases. In the field, McClain leads the FIU pitching staff with an ERA of 2.41 and a 5-3 record across seven starts and 10 appearances.
