FGCU Travels to Jacksonville, UNF to Begin the Week

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball teams heads to the road for the first time in eight games as it travels north to play Jacksonville in a pivotal Atlantic Sun doubleheader on Monday at 4:30 p.m. before heading across town to face UNF on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

FGCU owns a 28-22 record on the season including an 11-3 mark in the A-Sun to sit in second place behind first place Jacksonville (33-14, 12-2 A-Sun). The Dolphins swept Campbell on Saturday to take sole possession of first place. UNF is coming off a doubleheader split against the Camels on Friday to stand at 21-26 overall and 5-9 in the conference.

The Blue and Green are 6-0 all-time against Jacksonville, while UNF holds a 7-5 advantage over the Eagles as the teams were level at 3-3 when both were in Division II. The Ospreys have gotten the best of the Eagles as they hold a 4-2 advantage since the pair joined the A-Sun. FGCU had two six-run games in 2010 to beat the Dolphins, 6-0 and 6-4, but lost two close ones to the Ospreys, 2-1 and 4-2 (8).

Senior Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) continues to lead the Eagles in hits (51) and RBI (30), while topping the A-Sun with a .408 average, 43 runs scored and 15 doubles and is second in the league with a .720 slugging percentage. She is tied for fifth in the country in walks (45) and 11th in on-base percentage (.575).

Backing up Platt this week, sophomore Mariah Fernández (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers) owns a .265 clip after tallying six hits on the week including a grand slam against Lipscomb. Freshman Tori Williams (Dunnellon, Fla./Dunnellon) has been a standout in conference action, posting a .395 average with 13 runs scored and is now on a six-game hitting streak.

In the circle, redshirt senior Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) (14-9) owns a miniscule 0.29 ERA en route to a 7-0 record in A-Sun play, including a six-game winning streak. McDaniel owns the team’s top ERA at 1.30, while striking out 106 batters in 150.1 innings and is fifth in the nation in walks allowed per seven innings at 0.82. Holding a 6-6 record, Stephanie Sullivan (Venice, Fla./Venice) is second on the team with a 2.02 ERA, fanning 35 batters in 76.1 innings.

Jacksonville’s Olivia Kline fired a walk-off home run on Saturday to complete the sweep of Campbell and also pitched, allowing a run on five hits and six strikeouts in nine innings for the win in game two. She is second on the team with a .298 average, behind Sarah Simon’s team-leading .371 clip. Sarah Sigrest (17-5) is the Dolphins’ top pitcher with a 1.17 ERA, while striking out 144 batters in 161.1 innings and set the JU single-season win record, earning her 17th win against Campbell.

The Ospreys snapped a five-game losing streak with a win against the Camels on Friday and have time off until FGCU visits. Alyson Bailey tops the team with a .277 average, while Mariah Reynolds leads the team with 15 extra-base hits and 28 RBI. Cortney Radke is UNF’s go-to pitcher with a 19-17 record and 2.18 ERA, while striking out 253 batters in 227.2 innings.
