TAMPA, Fla. – The FGCU softball team earned a pair of wins against Long Island, 7-1, and Maine, 8-1, on Saturday on day two at the USF Tournament at the newly renovated USF Softball Stadium. Sophomore Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City) led the Eagles going 4-for-7 with two RBI and three runs scored.
FGCU improves to 2-1 and will finish the three day USF Tournament tomorrow with games against Illinois State at 11:15 a.m. and No. 2 Florida at 3:45 p.m.
In game one, the Eagles broke open a scoreless game with a four-run top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead they would never relinquish. After a strikeout to start the inning, three straight hits followed with Barnes roping an RBI single for the first run. Freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) pinch-hit a single to left field that scored Barnes and after two errors allowed two more runs to cross the plate.
FGCU scored two more runs in the top of the sixth with the big blow coming from sophomore Chelsea Zgrabik’s (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) two-run RBI single.
In the bottom of the sixth, Long Island was still hitless as freshman starting pitcher Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe HS) had a no-hitting going through five innings. The Blackbird’s Karina Cervantes checked her swing for a tapper down the third base side for the first hit of the game. After a fielder’s choice, Long Island got their run first of the game after an RBI single from Nichole Toven.
The Green and Blue added a run in the top of the seventh off a wild pitch to make the final score 7-1. Morgan earned her first collegiate victory after throwing six innings, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts.
In game two, the bats remained hot as the Eagles put up eight runs on 12 hits, including a six-run sixth inning to break out a close 2-1 game against Maine.
After three scoreless innings, FGCU scored two runs in the top of the fourth when sophomore Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony HS) smashed a lead-off double to begin the inning. Sophomore Tori Williams (Dunnellon, Fla./Dunnellon HS) pinch ran and advanced to third on a passed ball. After a line out and a strikeout, Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) singled home Williams for the first run of the game. Sophomore Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake HS) followed with a single down the right field line to score Garabedian and give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
The Black Bears responded in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back hits with two outs to score their first run of the game and cut the Eagles’ lead to 2-1. Maine’s Dagmar Ralphs picked up an RBI single in the inning.
The Green and Blue scored six runs in the top of the sixth to give the Eagles a comfortable lead at 8-1. FGCU did its damage with two outs as Barnes, and Zgrabik each had an RBI. Carpenter delivered her first collegiate homer with a two-run shot.
FGCU had three players with multiple hits in Barnes, Garabedian and Bembnowski, finishing a combined 6-for-10.
Redshirt senior Morgan Campen (Rougemont, N.C./Northern HS) pitched four innings to earn the win, allowing four hits and one earned run with one strikeout.
