FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team returns home from its first tournament of the season to host the LaQuinta Inn & Suites FGCU Tournament, beginning on Friday at the FGCU Softball Complex. Tennessee-Martin, Saint Louis, Delaware, Boston College and Binghamton travel to Fort Myers to face the Eagles.

FGCU (2-3) opens its home schedule against Tennessee-Martin at 6 p.m. and follows with an 8:15 p.m. contest against Saint Louis on Friday. The Eagles then face Delaware (6 p.m.) and ACC foe Boston College (8:15 p.m.) on Saturday before closing out the tournament with Binghamton at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The Green and Blue opened their 2012 season at the USF Tournament last weekend with victories against Long Island (W, 7-1) and Maine (W, 8-1), but fell to USF (L, 4-2), Illinois State (L, 11-0) and then-No. 2 Florida (L, 5-0).

FGCU hitters totaled seven extra-base hits through the first five games, including home runs from freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./ Hagerty HS) and sophomore Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony). Sophomore catcher Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) and Carpenter each drove in a team-high three runs on three hits, while sophomore Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City) led the team with a .500 average and an on-base percentage of .500.

Freshman pitcher Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe HS) finished her first tournament with a 1-1 record in the circle, with a 3.28 ERA allowing five earned runs and totaling 10 strikeouts. Sophomore Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) made three relief appearances, recording seven strikeouts and one save.

UT-Martin enters the tournament with a 3-2 record after defeating Kansas (W, 6-4), Nicholas State (W, 5-3) and Southern (W, 9-1) last weekend at the Southeastern Louisiana Lions Classic. The Skyhawks defeated FGCU last year in Fort Myers, 1-0, in eight innings at the Stevens Industries FGCU Tournament.

Saint Louis heads back to Florida after taking part in Jacksonville’s tournament last week, finishing 4-2 with wins over UNC Greensboro (W, 1-0), Buffalo (W, 8-1) and a pair of wins over host Jacksonville (W, 1-0 in eight, W, 2-1). The Billikens defeated FGCU, 2-0, last year at the Homewood Suites/Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Tournament in Fort Myers.

Delaware holds a 1-1 record coming into this weekend with a victory against Presbyterian (W, 2-1) in Charlotte last weekend. The Blue Hens are led by Jess Grisler, who is hitting .500 with a homer and three RBI.

Boston College and Binghamton are opening their 2012 seasons at the FGCU Tournament. The Bearcats went 24-24 (10-7 AE) in 2011 and clinched its first trip to the America East Tournament with a third-place finish during the regular season. Boston College went 15-31 last year, with a 5-14 mark in the ACC.

With the start of the season comes plenty of special ticket offers and promotions for FGCU fans and students. Little leaguers who wear their jersey get into all games for free the entire weekend for both baseball and softball with the purchase of an adult ticket. FGCU faculty, staff and students all get in free throughout the season with their Eagle ID.

Tickets for the LaQuinta Inn & Suites FGCU Tournament can be purchased through the FGCU Ticket Office in Alico Arena either in person or by phone at (239) 590-7145. Tickets are also available at All Tournament passes, valid for all games during the tournament, will be $15 and single game tickets will be $6 for adults and $3 for youth (ages 3-18).

FGCU will be running the “Diamond Dollars” promotion throughout the entire season, which current students are eligible for. Students attending the game will be entered to win $100 if an FGCU player hits the SIP sign on the outfield wall in the air or hits a homerun over the sign. If the game finishes without a winner, the money rolls over to the next game continuing to increase the pot. Winners must have a valid FGCU student ID and be present to win.
