FORT MYERS, Fla. – After opening the evening with a 6-0 win against Tennessee-Martin, the FGCU softball team dropped its night cap against Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis, 5-3, on the first day of the LaQuinta Inn & Suites FGCU Tournament on Friday night.

The split moves the Eagles’ record to 3-4 on the early season, heading into Saturday’s match-ups against Delaware (1-4) and ACC foe Boston College (1-1) at 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m., respectively.

In the opener, FGCU picked up another stellar performance from freshman pitcher Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe HS) who threw a three-hit complete game shutout with four strikeouts against Tennessee-Martin to earn her second win of the season.

Sophomore Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep HS) blasted her first homer of the season in the top of the second to give FGCU a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles scored four runs in the top of the third on three hits and one error to break open the game. An RBI single by sophomore Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) and a two-run double from junior Kayla Gabel (Lakeland, Fla./State College of Florida) highlighted the four-run inning that ended with FGCU leading 5-0.

Junior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers) added a solo home run in the sixth for the final 6-0 score.

Two FGCU players finished the game with multiple hits as freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) went 2-for-4 and Gabel had two doubles with two RBI.

In the nightcap, the Green and Blue built a 3-1 advantage after scoring two runs in the bottom of the first with bases loaded walks.

FGCU added another run in the bottom of the third when a Saint Louis error allowed Bembnowski to score from third.

The Eagles ran into trouble in the top of the sixth as Kelly Flanagan laced a double to lead off the inning. After a fly-out, Jessica Van Nostrand singled to left field to chase sophomore starting pitcher Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS). Josie threw 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Junior Brittney Pugh (Pembroke Pines, Fla./St. Petersburg College) came in relief and allowed a game-changing three-run homer against Laura Bohning to give the Billikens the 4-3 lead.

Saint Louis would add one more run in the top of the seventh after an RBI single from Van Nostrand. The Billikens in total had nine hits to rally back against the Green and Blue.

Pugh took the loss for FGCU, falling to 0-3 on the season, while Saint Louis received a stellar relief effort from Kelcie Matesa, who threw seven innings allowing four hits and no earned runs for the victory.

Junior catcher Lindsey Green (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood HS) finished with two hits, including a double to pace the Eagles.
