ORLANDO, Fla. – Junior pitcher Britney Pugh (Pembroke Pines, Fla./St. Petersburg College) tossed a complete game victory as the FGCU softball team defeated Eastern Michigan, 5-1, on Friday afternoon in its opening game at the UCF Courtyard by Marriott Invitational at the UCF Softball Complex.

“We had an efficient game today in all phases. The offense set the tone early with two big runs in the 1st inning to give us confidence,” said head coach David Deiros. “Pugh really stepped up today by getting ahead in the counts and she finished a great win for us. The defense was flawless as well with no errors.”

The Eagles improve to 5-6 on the season running its winning streak to two straight. Eastern Michigan falls to 0-1 on the season in its first game of 2012. Pugh finished her first career win throwing seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts.

FGCU will resume play tomorrow morning starting at 9 a.m. against Seton Hall and will finish day two against tournament host UCF at 1:30 p.m.

FGCU took an early lead in the top of the first by plating two runs after a two-run RBI single from sophomore Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS). Classmate Tori Williams (Dunnellon, Fla./Dunnellon HS) reached on an error by the third basemen to start the inning, followed by a sharp single down the left field line by Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS) to put runners on second and third with no outs. Freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) worked a walk to load the bases, but sophomore Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony HS) struck out looking. Zgrabik would deliver the one-out blow to give the Eagles the lead after one inning.

In the top of the third, Carpenter battled to another walk and stole second base with one out. Lanier plated Carpenter with a RBI double to right center to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

The Green and Blue added two more runs in the top of the fifth as Barnes worked a walk to start the frame and Carpenter laced an RBI triple to right center scoring Barnes from first. Zgrabik ended the scoring with her third RBI of the day after a groundout that scored Carpenter to give the Eagles a 5-0 advantage.

Eastern Michigan broke the shutout in the bottom of the sixth after a two-out RBI single from Sarah Gerber. Jessica Richards doubled to left field with one-out to set up Gerber’s RBI single. Gerber finished the game 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
