FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off a pair of wins at the UCF Invitational last weekend, the FGCU softball team travels to Clearwater, Fla. for the USF Under Armour Invitational on Mar. 2-4 at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
The Eagles (6-9) begin the USF Tournament with a pair of games against Quinnipiac and Western Michigan at 4 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., respectively, on Friday. The Green and Blue follow with contests against South Dakota State (11:30 a.m.) and Bowling Green (4:15 p.m.) on Saturday. FGCU closes the five-game tournament with a contest against BIG EAST foe Villanova at 12 p.m.
The Green and Blue picked up victories at the UCF Invitational last weekend against Eastern Michigan twice (W, 6-1, W, 1-0) but fell to Seton Hall twice (L, 6-3, L, 4-3) and tournament host UCF (L, 2-1).
FGCU has played 15 games on the season and has four batters hitting over .290, with sophomore Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony HS) leading the way with a .364 batting average and freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./ Hagerty HS) sitting second at .317. Carpenter is tied for the team lead in homers (2) and RBI (8), while sophomore Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS) has two home runs, six RBI and is fourth with a .293 batting average. Sophomore Tori Williams (Dunnellon, Fla./Dunnellon HS) is a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen bases, while hitting .281 on the season.
Leading the team with a 4-2 mark in the circle, freshman Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe HS) owns a 1.77 ERA after throwing 35.2 innings and allowing just nine earned runs with 32 strikeouts. Sophomore Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) has been effective with a 1.70 ERA in eight appearances, including two starts, with one save and 15 punch outs.
Quinnipiac has opened the 2012 season with four-straight wins, earning a pair of victories over St. Peter’s (W, 14-1, W, 11-3) and Iona (W, 4-3, W, 2-0). The Bobcats are led by senior Mina Duffy, who has three home runs and 10 RBI with a .545 batting average.
With a 1-5 record, Western Michigan is coming off its first tournament of the season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Broncos lost to then-No. 1 Arizona State (L, 10-0) and then-No. 9 Tennessee (L, 9-6), before defeating Cal State Northridge, 9-0, in five innings. Western Michigan is led by Diana Patterson, who has two home runs and four RBI.
South Dakota State (0-3) lost three-straight against Creighton (L, 8-1), Wichita State (L, 4-1) and Missouri State (L, 7-2). Alex Landon leads the Jack Rabbits with a .375 batting average and a homer in three games.
Bowling Green is 4-3 after going 2-2 at the Hilltopper Spring Classic last weekend, picking up wins over Morehead State (W, 6-3) and Murray State (W, 6-4). The Falcons have two batters with three home runs in Paige Berger and Katie Yoho.
Villanova went 2-3 on Feb.17-19 at the FIU Blue and Gold Feisberg Memorial tournament with victories against Jacksonville (W, 3-1) and Providence (W, 7-5). The Wildcats are led by Jamie O’Hara’s .471 batting average and four RBI.
