FGCU received great pitching on day one of the invitational but came up just short in game one against Quinnipiac, falling in the bottom of the seventh to lose 1-0.

Junior Britney Pugh (Pembroke Pines, Fla./St. Petersburg College) started for the Eagles and finished the game with 3.1 innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. In the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats put runners on first and second with one out. Sophomore pitcher Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) relieved Pugh and got back-to-back ground outs to end the threat.

The game would remain scoreless with the Green and Blue having an opportunity in the top of the seventh to break the tie. With one out, freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) worked a walk, followed by a hit by pitch from sophomore Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony HS) to put runners on first and second. Carpenter would move to third after a ground out but sophomore by Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake HS) struck out swinging to end the chance.

In the bottom of the seventh, Quinnipiac had three-straight singles to make the bases loaded with one out. Bridget Figmic then hit a dribble to the short stop but Nikki Barba slid home before the force out to win the game for the Bobcats. In game two, the Green and Blue used efficient pitching and timely hitting for a complete victory over Western Michigan, 8-2, in the night cap.

Freshman pitcher Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) picked up her fifth win of the season and second win against a school from Michigan. Morgan, who just last weekend defeated Eastern Michigan, took down the Broncos with a complete game win, allowing seven hits two earned runs and seven strikeouts.

FGCU pounded out nine hits to score eight runs with Carpenter’s 2-for-4 effort at the plate, including a two-run triple and two runs scored.

The Eagles scored the first run of the contest in the bottom of the third as Carpenter led off with a single, followed by a RBI double to left center from Lanier to give FGCU a 1-0 lead. Junior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers HS) singled to the short stop to put runners on first and second. After a ground out, Bembnowski provided the clutch two-out single up the middle to score two runners to give FGCU a 3-0 lead.

Western Michigan would answer with two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Eagles lead to 3-2. The Broncos scored both runs with two outs on four-straight singles to erase the shutout for Morgan.
