FORT MYERS, Fla. – After going 2-3 over the weekend, the FGCU softball team looks to gain momentum heading into Atlantic Sun play as they face Kennesaw State for a doubleheader on Wednesday, Mar. 7 at 5 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.
The Eagles are 8-12 on the season after going 2-3 in the first four tournaments of the season. FGCU is 7-0 in conference openers, including a 2-0 mark in A-Sun home openers. FGCU holds an all-time mark of 57-25 against A-Sun opponents, and leads the all-time series with a 7-1 record against the Owls. In last year’s meeting at Kennesaw, the Green and Blue split two close games against the Owls, 2-0 (10 innings) and a 6-5 loss.
FGCU went 2-3 at USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla., picking up victories against Western Michigan (W, 8-2) and Bowling Green (W, 6-1). The Eagles lost three close games to Quinnipiac (L, 1-0), South Dakota State (L, 2-1) and BIG EAST foe Villanova (L, 7-6).
Freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) leads the offensive attack for FGCU with a .333 average, 19 hits, five triples, 13 runs, two home runs and 13 RBI. Currently on a four-game hitting streak, she also leads the team with a .632 slugging percentage and has had six multi-hit games already this season. Sophomore Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony HS) is second on the team with a .317 average, six doubles, one home run and 10 RBI. Sophomore Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City) has a team-leading 15 runs scored and two home runs, second with four stolen bases and third with a .302 batting average.
In the circle, sophomore Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) is 1-1 with a team-best 1.66 ERA, 18 strikeouts and one save in 33.2 innings. Freshman Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) has a 5-2 record with five complete games and two shutouts. Morgan’s 2.42 ERA includes 41 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .205.
The Owls with a 10-8 record, come into the contest after going 1-2 in their previous three games. Kennesaw State is led by three players hitting over .345 in Sharon Swanson (.392), Jessica Cross (.370) and Lindsay Vollmer (.349). Swanson leads the team with eight home runs and 17 RBI, while Vollmer has five homers and 15 RBI. In the circle, Kennesaw State is led by Amanda Henderson (4-3), who has four complete games with two saves and 65 punch outs in 44.1 innings of work.
FGCU will remain at the FGCU Softball Complex to host the LaQuinta Inn & Suites FGCU Spring Break tournament on Friday, March 9-11.
