CLEARWATER, Fla. – The FGCU softball team had the bases loaded and the tying run on third in the top of the seventh but fell short against UMass, 2-1, on Sara Plourde’s no-hitter on Sunday at the USF The Game Tournament at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
The Eagles are 17-16 on the season, while UMass improves to 11-8.
The Green and Blue had their chances stringing together nine walks off Plourde but also struck out 13 times in the game. Plourde (10-6) finished the no-hitter with nine walks, one earned run and 13 punch outs. Freshman pitcher Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) threw 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits on two earned runs with three strikeouts.
In the bottom of the third, UMass scored the first run as Kelley double to left field to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, Matthew singled to second base to score Kelley from third. Morgan would get out of the inning, allowing just one run.
In the top of the fourth, FGCU would work three-straight walks with two outs to load the bases for sophomore Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep HS) who struck out looking to end the threat.
UMass added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Matthew triple to right center with one out. Diaz-Patters singled on a slap hit to first base to score Matthew for the second run of the game. Sophomore pitcher Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) came in relief to finish the inning. Josie finished 1.1 innings, allowing no hits with one strikeout.
The Eagles would have an opportunity to tie the game in the top of the seventh as pinch-hitter Kayla Ramey (Fort Myers, Fla./North Fort Myers HS/Seminole State College) walked, followed by another pinch-hit walk from freshman Stephanie Metzger (Naples, Fla./Palmetto Ridge HS). FGCU loaded the bases on a hit by pitch to sophomore Regan Knapik (Land O’Lakes, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS). Junior Stephanie Kujawa (Cooper City, Fla./Cooper City HS/Virginia Tech) roped a shot to third base that the shortstop picked up and threw home for the force out. Junior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers HS) worked an RBI walk to cut the lead to 2-1 with one out. With the bases still loaded, sophomore Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony HS) and classmate Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) struck out to end the game.
