FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team opened up a 3-0 lead and held on to take down Ivy League foe Dartmouth, 4-2, in the “Hit Pink” game on Thursday night at the FGCU Softball Complex.

The Eagles are 20-16 (1-1 A-Sun) on the season, while Dartmouth falls to 7-6. FGCU has won three straight games.

Freshman pitcher Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) picked up her 13th win of the season after throwing 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits one earned run with three strikeouts. Redshirt senior Morgan Campen (Rougemont, N.C./Northern HS) induced the final out of the game to record her third save of the season.

In the bottom of the third, the Eagles put runners on first and second after back-to-back singles from sophomores Regan Knapik (Land O’Lakes, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS). With two outs, sophomore Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) tripled off the wall in right to score Barnes and Knapik to give FGCU a 2-0 lead.

The Green and Blue added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth as freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) singled up the middle to start the frame. Junior Kayla Gabel (Lakeland, Fla./State College of Florida) worked a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. Sophomore Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep HS) placed a perfect bunt to first base to load the bases. Knapik earned an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to score Carpenter for the Eagles’ third run of the game.

The Big Green answered with a run in the top of the fifth when the Eagles turned a 1-6-3 double play to bring up Megan Averitt with two outs. Averitt hit a ground ball to shortstop that Knapik fired to first, but the ball got away from the first basemen and went all the way to the right field wall allowing Averitt to score an unearned run.

The Eagles put an insurance run on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Gabel doubled down the right field line, followed by Garabedian singling on a bunt to third base. Knapik reached on a fielder’s choice and earned an RBI by scoring Gabel from third.

In the top of the seventh, Dartmouth would not go away quietly as Katie Adams singled with one out. With two outs, the Big Green scored their second run off back-to-back singles from Rhiannon Saucedo and Kara Curosh. Campen came in relief of Morgan and struck out pinch-hitter Britta McOmber looking to end the game.

Garabedian finished the game 2-for-3 and Knapik was 1-for-2 with two RBI to pace the Eagles.
