TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – On the strength of sophomore pitcher Amanda Josie’s (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) complete game effort, the FGCU softball team lost game one 5-3 but bounced back with a 4-1 win against FAMU on Wednesday night in Tallahassee.
The Eagles are 21-17 (1-1 A-Sun) on the season, while FAMU’s record goes to 14-20.
In game one, FGCU took a 2-0 lead but FAMU rallied back to win 5-3 after a three-run fifth inning to seal the win.
In the top of the first, sophomore Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS) worked a walk and stole her 17th base of the season. Barnes would advance to third on a passed ball and would score the first run on another passed ball to put the Eagles in front 1-0.

The Rattlers would answer in the bottom of the third as Obic Roberson singled to the shortstop with one out. Christ Robbs reached on an error, followed by Donaldson’s two-run single to score two runs. Freshman Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) ended the threat with back-to-back ground outs to keep the score tied at 2-2.
FAMU would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth as the Rattlers would rally with two outs in the inning. Robbs singled and stole second base, while Donaldson was intentionally walked. Weaver singled to score Robbs and advanced to second on the throw. The big hit in the inning came from Kiefi Myrick who singled to score Donaldson and Weaver to give the Rattlers a 5-2 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, FGCU tried to mount a comeback as junior Lindsey Green (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood HS) singled to start the frame. After two outs, Fernandez singled up the middle to score Green to cut the lead to 5-3. A fly out to right field ended the game for the Eagles.
Morgan (13-4) took the loss for FGCU and Jenn Lindsey earned her fifth win of the season. Fernandez finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
In game two, the Eagles earned a quality start from Josie who picked up her sixth win of the year with a 4-1 victory against FAMU. Josie finished seven strong innings, allowing just three hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts.
FAMU took an early lead after scoring a run in the bottom of the second as Aria Stewart singled to start the inning. Ash Sheppard would pinch-run and advance to second off an error, while Robinson flied out for the first out. Tera Gainer singled to left field to score Sheppard to give the Rattlers a 1-0 lead. Josie would get a caught stealing and a strikeout to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Fernandez singled to left field to lead off the frame for the Eagles. After a fly out, Fernandez stole second to put herself in scoring position. With two outs, Bembnowski walked and freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) singled to score Fernandez to tie the game at 1-1. Carpenter finished 1-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Eagles.
The game would remain tied until the top of the seventh when the Eagles scored three runs on one hit and two errors to push ahead 4-1. Redshirt junior Kayla Gabel (Lakeland, Fla./State College of Florida) was hit by a pitch to lead things off. Sophomore Regan Knapik (Land O’Lakes, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) earned an RBI off a fielder’s choice to second as Gabel scored courtesy of a FAMU throwing error. After two more miscues from the Rattlers, the Eagles would plate two more runs to regain the lead for good.
In the bottom of the seventh, Josie would finish the game 1-2-3 on a strikeout, line out and a ground out. Josie lowered her team-leading ERA to 1.27 and earned her third complete game of the season to help the Eagles come away with the doubleheader split.
