TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FGCU softball team fell in a doubleheader against No. 22 Florida State, 5-0 and 7-1, on Thursday night at the JoAnne Graf Field in Tallahassee.

The Eagles are 21-19 (1-1 A-Sun) on the season, while No. 22 Florida State improves to 31-5.

In game one, the Seminoles score twice in the first and sixth innings to shutout the Eagles 5-0 on nine hits. Freshman pitcher Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) threw four innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run with two strikeouts to earn the loss. Monica Perry improved to 13-2 earning the win by allowing just two hits and had seven strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first, FSU took a 2-0 lead after Tiffani Brown reached on a throwing error from the Eagles, allowing Brown to advance to second. Shayla Jackson singled to second base to score Brown to give FSU a 1-0 lead. Maddie O’Brien singled through the left side to put runners on first and second. After a ground out, Courtney Senas lined out to right field to score Jackson for the second run.

In the top of the third, freshman Lauren Stevens (Naples, Fla./Palmetto Ridge HS) earned a pinch-hit single to start the inning. Stevens advanced to third with two outs but the Eagles were unable to bring her home.

Florida State added another run in the bottom of the forth as Jackson picked up an RBI single for her second hit of the night. Morgan (13-5) was able to end the inning on a ground out to prevent further damage.

Redshirt senior Morgan Campen (Rougemont, N.C./Northern HS) came in relief in the bottom of the fifth for FGCU. Campen worked a scoreless frame but was charged with two earned runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Seminoles scored two more runs on two hits with the big blow coming from O’Brien’s two-out two-run double to right center to push FSU’s lead to 5-0.

FGCU picked up its third hit of the night when sophomore Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake HS) lined a single to right center in the top of the seventh. The Eagles would end the game on a fielder’s choice as Bembnowski was out at second.

In game two, Florida State scored five runs in the first and second innings to run away with a 7-1 victory over the Eagles. The Green and Blue dropped back-to-back games for the first time since Feb. 25 against Seton Hall (6-2) and UCF (2-1).

Sophomore pitcher Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) finished all six innings, allowing nine hits on two earned runs with two strikeouts to fall to 6-4 on the season.

Junior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers HS) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) had a 2-for-3 effort to pace the Eagles. Sophomore Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS) added her team-leading 18th stolen base of the season.

In the bottom of the first, the Seminoles put runners on first and second with singles from Brown and Jackson. O’Brien earned an RBI off a sacrifice fly to left field to score Brown. Josie ended the inning by striking out Senas.

In the bottom of the second, Florida State scored four runs off four hits and one error to open up a 5-0 lead on the Eagles. With two outs, the Seminoles received three straight singles from Hensley, Austin and Brown to load the bases. Jackson reached on an error, allowing Hensley to score from third. O’Brien delivered a bases clearing double to left center to plate three runs.

The Green and Blue added a run in the top of the third as Fernandez started a two-out rally with a single to left field. Sophomore Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony HS) singled down the right field line to put runners on first and third. Bembnowski reached on an error by the centerfielder to score Fernandez to give the Eagles their first run of the game.

The Eagles had an opportunity in the top of the fifth as Fernandez singled for her second hit of the game to start the inning. After a fielder’s choice and a strikeout, Carpenter singled to the shortstop to put runners on first and second. Freshman Stephanie Metzger (Naples, Fla./Palmetto Ridge HS) worked a walk to load the bases but a ground out ended the inning for FGCU.

The Seminoles would add runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make the final score 7-1. O’Brien picked up her fifth RBI of the game with another sacrifice fly in the fifth.
