Softball Hosts Mercer in Critical Doubleheader on Senior Day this Weekend

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Finishing with a 3-1 record last week, the FGCU softball team prepares for a doubleheader against Atlantic Sun foe Mercer on Senior Day on Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.

Prior to the start of the game against Mercer, FGCU will honor seniors Lindsey Green (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood HS) and Morgan Campen (Rougemont, N.C./Northern HS).

The Eagles are 25-21 (5-3 A-Sun) on the season after earning a split against Lipscomb (W 1-0, L 14-5) and a sweep against Belmont (9-1, 12-6) last weekend. The Green and Blue are currently in fourth place in the A-Sun trailing Stetson (6-4), USC Upstate (4-2) and Kennesaw State (7-3).

FGCU is led offensively by sophomore Jessica Barnes’ (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City) .316 average, four home runs, 33 runs, 22 stolen bases and 36 hits. Sophomore Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony HS) is second on the team with a .303 average on 33 hits, five home runs, 10 doubles and 20 RBI, while freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) is tied for fifth in the nation with six triples holding a .300 average on 39 hits and 26 runs. Sophomore Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) added another home run last week to add to her team-leading six home runs and 32 RBI.

In four conference games last weekend, the Eagles hit .310 at the plate as a team with seven doubles, eight home runs, 27 runs and 25 RBI, while slugging .620 against Lipscomb and Belmont.

In the circle, freshman Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) owns a 15-5 record with 14 complete games and six shutouts. Morgan’s 1.60 ERA leads the team, while adding 106 strikeouts in 131.1 innings of work. Sophomore Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) is 8-5 with a 2.01 ERA, recording 38 strikeouts and one save in 97.1 innings.

Mercer (24-18, 5-5 A-Sun) is coming off a tough doubleheader sweep at the hands of Stetson on Thursday falling 6-3 and 6-4 to the Hatters. Sitting at 5-5 in the A-Sun, the Bears are tied for fifth with UNF heading into the critical doubleheader. The Bears are led by McKenzie Woody, who holds a .439 batting average on 61 hits, one home run, 40 runs, 23 stolen bases and 13 RBI. Mercer is led in the circle by Jessica Holsinger, who has a 11-4 record with a 1.98 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 109.2 innings. The Eagles hold a 4-2 lead in the series after a split in Macon, Ga. last season.
