Softball Travels to Final Road Trip to Face ETSU and USC Upstate this Weekend

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After picking up a pair of sweeps against Mercer and Jacksonville, the FGCU softball team travels to Johnson City, Tenn. for a doubleheader against Atlantic Sun foe ETSU and finishes the weekend in Spartanburg, S.C. to face USC Upstate. The twin bill against the Bucs starts on Friday, April 20 at 4 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader against the Spartans at 4 p.m.  

The Eagles are 29-21 (9-3 A-Sun) on the season after earning a pair of comeback walk off wins against Jacksonville (3-2, 3-2) on Tuesday night. In game one, FGCU won a thrilling comeback victory after trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the 11th inning as sophomore Tori Williams (Dunnellon, Fla./Dunnellon HS) lined a game-winning walk off single to left field to complete the 3-2 win. In game two, with the Eagles down to their last strike junior Kayla Gabel (Lakeland, Fla./State College of Florida) roped a pinch-hit two-run double to the gap in left center to score the tying runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City) followed with a single to right field to give FGCU a second straight walk off win and give the Green and Blue a sweep against the visiting Dolphins. The Green and Blue are currently tied for first in the A-Sun with Kennesaw State.  

FGCU has four players hitting over .300, led by Barnes’ .320 average, six home runs, 37 runs, 23 stolen bases and 40 hits. Sophomore Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony HS) is second on the team with a .314 average on 37 hits, 10 doubles, five home runs and 22 RBI, while classmate Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake HS)  is third on the team with a .308 mark on 40 hits, three home runs, six doubles and 21 RBI. Sophomore Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) is hitting .302 and leads the team with seven home runs and 37 RBI.

In the circle, freshman Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) owns a 17-5 record with 16 complete games and six shutouts. Morgan’s 1.47 ERA leads the team, while adding 114 strikeouts in 147.1 innings of work. Sophomore Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) is 9-5 with a 2.06 ERA, recording 41 strikeouts and one save in 108.2 innings.

ETSU (10-27, 0-10 A-Sun) has lost 10 straight conference games after going 0-4 in Jacksonville, Fla. last weekend. The Bucs are led by Casey Horner, who is hitting .352 with six doubles, seven home runs and 24 RBI on the season. In the circle, Katie Wolff has a 4-14 record in 22 appearances for ETSU and leads the team with a 3.51 ERA.    

USC Upstate (34-8, 7-3 A-Sun) enters the weekend on the heels of a sweep against UNF (7-5, 6-1) in Jacksonville, Fla. last weekend. The Spartans are led by freshman Shellie Robinson who is hitting .408 with 12 home runs, 12 doubles and 33 RBI on the season. In the circle, Hannah Alexander (23-3) is third in the nation in wins and has a 1.32 ERA heading into this weekend’s matchups.
