CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 38 FGCU (12-5) finished off its time at the USF Under Armour Invitational with a 8-0 five inning victory over Maine on Sunday afternoon at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.

“Great job today by our team and great job by Shelby on the shutout,” said head coach David Deiros. (Chelsea) Zgrabik’s six RBI today really put the game away early. We had a really good chance to get out of there and we did so it was a great job.”

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, junior Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) hit a chopper up the middle to bring across the game’s first runs and put FGCU up 2-0 early on. The bases were reloaded later in the inning and on a wild pitch, which brought another run across the plate to extend the Eagle lead. A Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep HS) sacrifice fly brought across the game’s fourth run and made it 4-0 in favor of FGCU after the first inning.

The Green and Blue continued to extend their lead in the bottom of the second inning and forced a Maine pitching change. With the bases loaded once again for the Eagles, they made sure to capitalize on the opportunity as Zgrabik blasted a ball out of the park for a grand slam that stretched the FGCU lead to eight runs.

Zgrabik’s long ball was her third at the USF Under Armour Invitational and her strong showing on Sunday gave her six RBI out of the eight FGCU runs in the contest.

Even with the game in hand, the Green and Blue continued to work on padding their lead over the next few innings by putting runners on base though walks and base hits, but no more came across.

The FGCU defense kept Maine well in check as the Black Bears never had a runner advance past second base during the game and did so on only one occasion.

2012 A-Sun Pitcher of the Year Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) finished her shutout to get the win and end the game in five innings after a strong start in which she only allowed three hits.

By scoring eight runs in the contest, FGCU improved to 12-0 this season when scoring five or more runs on the 2013 season.

The Green and Blue will head home to Fort Myers, but not for long as they will head out west to California for a road-trip that will consist of seven games in five days, starting with a doubleheader at St. Mary’s in Moraga, Calif. on Wednesday, March 6 at 4:00 p.m. EST.
