FORT MYERS, Fla. – With a three-game sweep of in-state rival Stetson under their belts, the FGCU softball team (20-9, 3-0 A-Sun) will play three games out of conference this week on Tuesday, March 19 and Thursday, March 21 at the FGCU Softball Complex.
The Green and Blue will play host to Iowa State on Tuesday, March 19 at 6 p.m. and Dartmouth, in a doubleheader, on Thursday, March 21 with the first game to begin at 4 p.m.
FGCU will look to keep its current five-game win streak going in whatever way they have to, with three of those wins being in comeback fashion with late-game heroics. Two of those wins came on March 16 and 17 against conference opponent Stetson, which helped the Eagles in being the only A-Sun team yet to lose a league game which has FGCU atop the A-Sun standings.
Senior outfielder Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers HS) will look to keep swinging her hot bat against the Cyclones and Big Green after recording eight RBI, a .529 batting average and a .941 slugging percentage in the last five FGCU contests. The impressive offensive performance was enough to earn Fernandez an A-Sun Player of the Week Honor, the league announced on Monday, March 18.
The FGCU pitching staff will look to keep the Iowa State (12-13) dynamic duo of Erica Miller and Tori Torrescano from getting comfortable at the plate. The two are ranked first and second at Iowa State in home runs with the pair having hit home runs and doubles in successive games multiple times in 2012. Collegesportsmadness.com selected Miller to its Preseason All-American fourth team at first base. The site also named Miller to its Preseason Big 12 first team while Torrescano was chosen to the conference’s second team.
Dartmouth (8-5) features a number of returners this spring and returns quite a bit of its offense from last season. The Big Green returns their top hitter Kristen Rumley who led the team with a .355 batting average while Kara Curosh, who hit .281 also returns. Rumley had 22 hits with four runs and six RBI during her rookie season while Curosh had a team-best 38 hits to go with 13 runs and 14 RBI. Rumley also works from inside the circle for Dartmouth as she posted 151 strikeouts in 116.0 innings pitched.
The three contests this week will cap off an eight-game home stand for FGCU and by winning the first five games of the span, the Green and Blue have already sealed a winning record on the home stand. The FGCU Softball Complex has served as a true home field advantage for the Eagles where they are 12-3 this season, currently with nine consecutive wins.
