MACON, Ga. – While taking two of three contests to win its weekend series on the road against Mercer, the FGCU softball team (26-13, 7-4 A-Sun) used offensive firepower from junior outfielder Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS) which helped her garner Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Barnes, a 2013 Preseason All-Atlantic Sun first team selection in the outfield, has now been named A-Sun Player of the Week twice in her career with the first time coming on March 12, 2012 for her performances the week prior. Barnes is the third Eagle to be named A-Sun Player of the Week this season with senior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers HS) receiving the honor on March 18 and Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) receiving it on March 4.SHSHS)
The junior outfielder hit two home runs and eight RBI over the three-game set against the Bears while tallying 14 total bases off of six hits. Barnes finished the weekend with three starts and a 1.077 slugging percentage that led the entire FGCU lineup.
The two-sport athlete, who also competes in volleyball, registered a .462 batting average on 13 at bats at Sikes Field in three contests. Over the three weekend contests, Barnes led FGCU in at-bats (13), runs scored (6), doubles (2), RBI (8) and slugging percentage (1.077).
Overall on the 2013 season, Barnes has posted a .322 batting average with 27 RBI and a near perfect mark when stealing bases as she is 20-21 through 39 games, which has her ranked second in the A-Sun.
The Green and Blue will now remain in the state of Georgia to take on Kennesaw State in a trio of mid-week matchups at Bailey Softball Complex. The first two games of the series will be played in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9 with the first game set to begin at 3 p.m. The series finale will take place on Wednesday, April 10 at 3 p.m.
