KENNESAW, Ga. – Playing in the rubber match of a three-game set on the road, the FGCU softball team fell in the series finale against Kennesaw State, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Bailey Softball Complex.
The defeat drops FGCU to 27-15 overall in 2013 with an 8-6 mark against A-Sun opposition. Kennesaw State improves to 26-14 this season with the win as the Owls have compiled a 10-8 record in conference play. The Eagles finished with a 3-3 record on its six-game Georgia road trip that began with a weekend series at Mercer.
Entering the matchup with an increased energy level to get a jump from the start, the Eagles made Kennesaw State starting pitcher Amanda Henderson work from inside the circle as they drew three walks in the first two innings to create offensive opportunities early on.
With runners on first and second, both having reached on walks, junior Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep HS) roped a double into right field to bring across the game’s first run and place runners on second and third with one out in the second inning.
A single from junior shortstop Regan Knapik (Land O’Lakes, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) supplied more Eagle offense by bringing across another run and making it 2-0 for FGCU after having got to Henderson early on.
Junior pitcher Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) got the start from inside the circle for the Green and Blue. Through the first two innings of play, Josie allowed just one runner to reach base, via a base hit.
Kennesaw State came to battle and they proved it in the bottom of the third by loading the bases with two outs and using a pair of singles to bring three runs across, taking a 3-2 advantage over FGCU with a two-out rally.
Looking to hold onto its lead, Kennesaw State inserted a new pitcher to keep the Eagle batters on their feet heading into the top of the fourth inning.
FGCU struggled to put additional pressure on the Kennesaw State defense as the Eagles hit a rough patch after scoring two runs in the second inning.
Kennesaw State’s Abbey Mixon, who entered for Henderson in the top of the fourth inning, clamped down on the FGCU batting order to allow just one hit in her four innings of relief.
In the top of the seventh with their backs against the wall, FGCU looked to bring across one run and draw even with Kennesaw State to extend the game. The Eagles were unsuccessful in their quest as they fell 3-2 in the series finale and dropped the series overall by losing two of the three contests.
With the three-game series now complete, FGCU and Kennesaw State have now faced off a total of 14 times in the history of the two programs. The Eagles now lead the all-time series over the Owls 10-4.
The Green and Blue will head home to the FGCU Softball Complex to begin a nine-game home stand that will get started on Saturday, April 13 with a doubleheader against Jacksonville at 2 p.m.
