MACON, Ga. – With the FGCU softball team (35-16, 15-7) coming off a sweep of Northern Kentucky and having won eight of its last nine, junior transfer Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, Fla./Daytona State College) pitched flawlessly over the weekend against the Norse while going 3-0 and posting a 0.00 ERA to lead her to be named Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.

In her first season on the FGCU squad after transferring from Daytona State College, the honor marks the first A-Sun Pitcher of the Week award for Owen and the first for FGCU since then-freshman Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) received the honor on Apr. 23, 2012.

Owen is the fourth eagle this season to receive a weekly honor with junior Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS), senior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers HS) and junior Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) each having been named A-Sun Player of the Week on one occasion.

The junior pitcher starred from inside the circle during the three-game set against the Norse as Owen went 3-0 and posted a 0.00 ERA in 16.1 innings pitched. Owen allowed just eight hits as she appeared in all three of the games over the weekend and struck out nine.

On Saturday (Apr. 27) in game one, Owen collected a complete game shutout while going eight innings and only surrendering two hits while collecting six strikeouts in a 2-0 FGCU win. Owen took it to NKU in the series finale on Sunday, Apr. 28 as she went eight innings to keep the Norse from threatening, leading the Green and Blue to a 2-1 win and a sweep of NKU.

Overall on the 2013 season, Owen has posted a 2.68 ERA in 120.1 innings pitched with a 12-6 record. The first year Eagle currently sits sixth in the A-Sun in batters struck out looking (32) and ninth in appearances (30).

FGCU will hit the road for its final series of the 2013 regular season as they will travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on North Florida. The Eagles and Ospreys will play a trio of contests with the action to begin with a doubleheader on Friday, May 3 at 4 p.m.

In-game Twitter updates (@FGCU_Softball), results and a recap from the day’s action will be available at www.FGCUATHLETICS.com.
