NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship having concluded with No. 2 USC Upstate taking the crown to clinch an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, the All-Tournament team was announced. Senior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers HS) of the FGCU softball team (36-18, 16-7 A-Sun) was the lone Eagle to be named to the team of 11, the A-Sun announced Saturday evening from Draper Diamond.
No. 2 FGCU had its season end with a, 2-1, loss to No. 1 North Florida on Friday, May 10 in heartbreaking fashion as they Ospreys walked-off winners with a base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the tournament opener against No. 6 Stetson, Fernandez went 4-for-4, including two singles, one double and one triple to finish one home run short of hitting for the cycle. The southwest Florida product drove in two runs and scored twice in a losing effort as the Hatters beat the Eagles, 14-6.
Fernandez finished the tournament with a .625 batting average in three games for FGCU while collecting two doubles and one triple for nine total bases. The senior Eagle recorded a 1.125 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .700 to lead the way for the Green and Blue batting order.
Tournament champion USC Upstate placed four on the team, including the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while tournament host Lipscomb placed three on the team.
