FORT MYERS, Fla. – After a successful nonconference double header this week, the FGCU softball team will be back in action Saturday and Sunday as the team hosts East Tennessee State University for a three-game series at the FGCU Softball Complex.  The Eagles will host a double header beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday and will wrap up the series with a noon tilt on Sunday.

FGCU began conference play with a 1-2 record at Lipscomb this weekend and moved to 14-11-1 on the season after a split in the midweek ACC matchups.

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) has consistently led the Eagles this season and currently tops the roster with a batting average of .453 to rank among the top 30 in the nation.  Carpenter holds a perfect fielding percentage in the outfield and paces the team with five homeruns and 23 RBI through 26 games.  Carpenter has also added seven doubles and crossed the plate 25 times.

Louie Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School) adds an average of .306 for FGCU with 19 hits in 62 at bats. Ross has also hit four hits over the fence and has knocked in 17 RBI.  Mackenzie McAvoy (Plant City, Fla./Plant City High School) also maintains an average of over .300 for the Eagles with a mark of .303 with four homeruns, five doubles and a triple in 26 games.  Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) has hit .298 through 21 games this year with 23 runs scored, three homeruns and five other extra-base hits. 

The FGCU pitching staff is led by Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) who maintains an ERA of 3.09 and holds a record of 5-3 from the circle.  Morgan has allowed just 20 earned runs through 45.1 innings of work.  She’s let up 51 hits, while striking out 20 batters.  Taylor Wade (Pace, Fla./Pace High School) leads the team in ERA with a mark of 2.88 in 10 appearances.  She has started two games for FGCU and has allowed just 14 earned runs in 34 innings.  At the plate Wade averages .333 with three hits in nine at bats. She’s drilled one double and knocked in one run. The pitching staff holds a collective ERA of 3.16 and has struck out 65 batters and held opponents to an average of .288.

Offensively, the team has held a combined average of .271 and has outscored opponents 116-95.


The Bucs have gone 3-5 in road or neutral-site games this season, with a 10-8 record overall and a 1-2 mark in conference action.

ETSU is led by senior Jackie Baird who maintains a .396 batting average through 18 games.  Baird has knocked in a team-high 24 RBI with 11 homeruns in 19 hits. Brooke Baxter has added an average of .368 in 11 games, while Kaite Wolff has knocked in seven RBI in 14 games. 

From the circle the Buccaneers are led by freshman Taylor Carter.   and senior Katie Wolff.  Carter has a record of 7-1, with 27 strike outs and an ERA of 1.45, while Wolff also contributes to the pitching staff with an ERA of 2.17 and a record of 203.

ETSU is led by head coach Brad Irwin who is in his fourth season with the Buccaneers.


The Eagles traveled to Johnson City, Tenn. last season to face the Bucs in conference action.  Backed by four RBI from Carpenter, the Eagles picked up two wins in the double-header.  FGCU defeated ETSU 5-0 in game one before earning an extra-inning 10-9 win in game two.  The third game was called due to rain.


Following the three-game series, the Eagles will break from conference action to host Connecticut in a midweek double-header.  FGCU will host the Huskies on Tuesday, March 18 with games scheduled for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
