FORT MYERS, Fla. – After winning five of its last six games, the FGCU softball team will break from Atlantic Sun action to welcome Connecticut for a midweek double header Tuesday, March 18 at the FGCU Softball Complex.  The Eagles will face the Huskies at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

FGCU continued conference play with a 4-2 record after sweeping ETSU this weekend and moved to 17-11-1 on the season.

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) has consistently led the Eagles this season and currently tops the roster with a batting average of .446 to rank among the top 30 in the nation.  Carpenter holds a perfect fielding percentage in the outfield and paces the team with six homeruns and 27 RBI through 29 games.  Carpenter has also added seven doubles and crossed the plate 26 times.

Senior Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice High School) has recently stormed to the top of the team statistics with an overall average of .333.  Zgrabik has four homeruns on the season with 23 RBI and has drawn 15 walks.  The catcher holds a fielding percentage of .975 with 72 putouts this season.

Mackenzie McAvoy (Plant City, Fla./Plant City High School), Louie Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School) and Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) all add to the Eagle offense with averages over .282.  McAvoy and Barnes have hit .314 and .303, respectively, while Ross had hit four homeruns and knocked in 17 runs. 

The FGCU pitching staff is led by Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) and Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, North Fort Myers High School).  Morgan holds an overall ERA of 2.81, while Owen leads the team at 2.73.  The duo combine for a win loss record of 10-4 and have pitched 96 innings for the Eagles.  Owen leads the team with 25 strikeouts and has held foes to an average of just .223.

Taylor Wade (Pace, Fla./Pace High School) helps the Eagles in the circle and in the batter’s box as the righty has recorded an ERA of 2.88 and a batting average of .333.  Wade holds a record of 2-3 and has allowed only 14 earned runs in 34 innings.  At the plate, she has drilled one double and knocked in one run in nine appearances. The pitching staff holds a collective ERA of 2.90 and has struck out 77 batters and held opponents to an average of .271.

Offensively, the team has held a combined average of .274 and has outscored opponents 127-98.


Connecticut will travel to Fort Myers with a record of 5-14 on the season.  The Huskies started the season at 0-5 and have since picked up wins over Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Eastern Kentucky, Wright State, Youngstown State and Wagner.

The Huskies are led by sophomore Valerie Sadowl and junior Emily O’Donnell at the plate.  In 49 plate appearances, Sadowl has produced 19 hits with two homeruns and eight RBI for an average of .388.  O’Donnell has hit .333 through 19 games with 19 hits and six drawn walks.

From the circle the Huskies are led by junior Lauren Duggan and sophomore Alyson Ambler.  Duggan holds a record of 4-7 with 32 strike outs in 66 innings pitched.  She has allowed 31 earned runs and 72 hits and holds an ERA of 3.29.  Ambler has a record of 0-2 for the Huskies with an ERA of 4.34. 

As a unit, Connecticut is led by head coach Karen Mullins who is in her 31st season in Storrs.  The team has been outscored by opponents, 97-56 this season and holds a team average of .241 compared to its opponents’ .306.

It will be the teams’ first-ever meeting.


Following Tuesday’s double header, the Eagles will travel to league-favorite USC Upstate for a three-game series this weekend.  The games in Spartanburg, S.C. are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.  The teams will play a double header on Saturday before facing off in a single game on Sunday afternoon.
