DeLAND, Fla. –The FGCU (19-14-1; 4-5 A-Sun) softball team will travel to DeLand this weekend to face conference opponent Stetson (22-5; 6-2A-Sun) in a three-game series. The matchup will begin with a double header at 1 p.m. on Saturday and will conclude with a single contest at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Stetson Hatters are currently ranked second in the Atlantic Sun Conference behind defending champion USC Upstate with a 6-2 record.  The Hatters have dropped losses only to USC Upstate and Mercer, while the Eagles hold sixth place in the 10-team league. 

The Green and Blue

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) has consistently led the Eagles this season at the plate and currently tops the roster with a batting average of .474 to rank 13th in the nation and first in the conference. Carpenter holds a .980 fielding percentage in the outfield and paces the team with six home runs and 31 RBI through 34 games. Carpenter has also added nine doubles and crossed the plate 27 times to rank among the top 30 in the nation in on base percentage.  Carpenter is also ranked third in the nation in slugging percentage with a .753.

Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla/Venice HS) adds an average of .322 for FGCU with 28 hits in 87 at bats. Zgrabik has also hit six hits over the fence and has knocked in 27 runs. Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) holds a batting average of .300 or higher with a mark of .305.  Barnes also ranks among the top 30 in the nation for runs per game and ranks fourth in the nation for triples with four. 

Offensively, FGCU has a combined average of .272 and has outscored its opponents, 140-121.

The FGCU pitching staff is led by Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) as she maintains an ERA of 2.91 and holds a record of 7-4 in the circle. Morgan has allowed just 27 earned runs through 65 innings of work. Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers High School) has an ERA of 2.96 in 12 appearances. She has started eight games for the Eagles and has allowed 20 earned runs in 47.1 innings.

The pitching staff holds a collective ERA of 3.14 and has struck out 91 batters and held opponents to a batting average of just .272.

Stetson

Stetson is led by freshman Jessie Tenbroeck and junior Demi Meza.  Tenbroeck boasts a .402 batting average and has 37 hits and nine RBI.  Meza maintains a .398 batting average with 33 hits, 27 RBI and five home runs in 27 contests.

From the circle the Hatters are led by senior veterans Meredith Owen and Sarah Read.  Owen has a record of 13-3 with 84 strikeouts and an ERA of .64.  Read has a record of 8-1with 39 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.77.

The Hatters have outscored opponents 176-69 in 27 games and hold a team ERA of 1.83.

Head coach Frank Griffin is in his 18th season at Stetson and has won 574 games with the Hatters.

Next Up

FGCU will return to the FGCU Softball Complex to take on FIU (20-12, 3-3 C-USA) next week.  The Eagles and the Panthers will battle on Wednesday, April 2, with first pitch of the double header scheduled for 5 p.m.
