FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU softball team will play its last nonconference double header against the Owls of FAU this week.  The Wednesday matchup will begin at 5 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.

The Eagles are 22-19-1 on the season after taking two-of-three games against conference opponent Kennesaw State this past weekend.

The Green and Blue

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) has led the Eagles this season at the plate and currently tops the roster with a batting average of .446 to rank 24th in the nation and first in the conference. Carpenter holds a .966 fielding percentage in the outfield and paces the team with seven home runs and 31 RBI through 42 games. Carpenter has also added nine doubles and crossed the plate 32 times to rank second in the conference with 84 total bases.  Carpenter is also ranked fourth in the conference in slugging percentage with a .694.

Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla/Venice High School) adds an average of .358 for FGCU with 38 hits in 106 at bats. Zgrabik has also hit 10 hits over the fence and has knocked in 34 runs. Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) holds a batting average of .321 and ranks among the top 30 in the nation for runs per game and ranks third in the nation for triples and first in the conference with five.

Offensively, FGCU has a combined average of .269 and has outscored its opponents, 163-147.

The FGCU pitching staff is led by Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) as she maintains an ERA of 2.69 and holds a record of 8-5 in the circle.  Morgan has allowed just 32 earned runs through 83.1 innings of work. Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./ Estero High School) has an ERA of 3.23 in 19 appearances.  She has started 14 games for the Eagles and has allowed 40 earned runs in 86.2 innings.

The pitching staff holds a collective ERA of 3.09 and has struck out 112 batters and held opponents to a batting average of just .278.

FAU

The Owls travel to Fort Myers with a record of 24-19 on the season and a 7-8 Conference USA mark.  The Owls recently lost two-of-three games to in-state foe FIU.

The Eagles are 2-0 in all-time meetings with the Owls dating back to 2007-08 season.  FGCU took game one 7-2 and game two 3-2 in a double header.

FAU is led by sophomore Christina Martinez and senior Whitley Herb.  Martinez has a .346 batting average and has 47 hits and 12 runs for 20 RBI. Herb maintains a .324 batting average and has 47 hits and 22 runs for 3 RBI.

From the circle the Owls are led by junior Samantha Messer and freshman Kylee Hanson.  Messer has a record of 12-5 with 66 strikeouts for an ERA of 1.67.  Hanson holds a record of 5-9 with 69 strikeouts for an ERA of 2.03.

Head coach Joan Joyce is in her 21st season as the softball coach at FAU. Joyce also coaches the women’s golf team and currently holds an overall record of 781-490 with the softball program.

Next Up

FGCU will travel to Jacksonville to face conference opponent JU (5-12; 14-23 A-Sun) in a three-game series this weekend.  The Eagles and Dolphins will begin battle on Saturday, April 12, with the first pitch of the series scheduled for 1 p.m.
