@FGCU_Softball Heads to Jacksonville For Three-Game Series

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU softball team will travel to north Florida to continue conference play this weekend against the Dolphins of Jacksonville University.  The three game-series will begin Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m. and will conclude Sunday, at 1 p.m.

The Eagles are 23-20-1 on the season after splitting a double header against FAU this past week and hold a 6-9 record in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

The Green and Blue

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) has led the Eagles this season at the plate and currently tops the roster with a batting average of .432 to rank 24th in the nation and first in the conference. Carpenter holds a .967 fielding percentage in the outfield and paces the team with seven home runs and 37 RBI through 44 games. Carpenter has also added nine doubles and crossed the plate 32 times to rank second in the conference with 84 total bases.  Carpenter is also ranked fourth in the conference in slugging percentage with a .672.

Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla/Venice High School) adds an average of .367 for FGCU with 40 hits in 109 at bats. Zgrabik has also hit 11 hits over the fence and has knocked in 37 runs. Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) holds a batting average of .319 and ranks among the top 30 in the nation for runs per game and ranks third in the nation for triples and first in the conference with five.

Offensively, FGCU has a combined average of .264 and has outscored its opponents, 166-151.

The FGCU pitching staff is led by Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) as she maintains an ERA of 2.59 and holds a record of 8-5 in the circle.  Morgan has allowed just 32 earned runs through 86.1 innings of work. Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./ Estero High School) has an ERA of 3.09 in 21 appearances.  She has started 15 games for the Eagles and has allowed 40 earned runs in 90.2 innings.

The pitching staff holds a collective ERA of 3.01 and has struck out 116 batters and held opponents to a batting average of just .277.


The Dolphins are 14-24 on the season and 5-12 in Atlantic Sun play.  Jacksonville recently lost to the in-state foe Florida A&M in a midweek matchup.

The Eagles are 12-2 in all time meetings with the Dolphins dating back to the 2008 season.  FGCU swept Jacksonville last year in a three-game series in which two of the three games were taken into ten innings.  The Eagles outscored the Dolphins 23-19.

Jacksonville is led by freshman Charli Bradshaw and sophomore Emily Sanchez.  Bradshaw has a batting average of .333 and has 21 hits, 12 runs and four home runs for five RBI.  Sanchez maintains a .305 batting average with 36 hits, three runs and one home run for 21 RBI.

From the circle the Dolphins are led by sophomores Victoria Brown and Cecile Gomez.  Brown has a record of 7-9 with 54 strikeouts for an ERA 3.00.  Gomez has a record of 3-3 with 18 strikeouts for a 4.38 ERA.

Head coach Ali Higgs is in her third season as the softball coach at Jacksonville.

Next up

FGCU will host conference foe North Florida (23-18; 7-11 A-Sun) in a three-game series next weekend.  The Eagles and Ospreys will begin the matchup Friday, April 18, with the first pitch of the series scheduled for 5 p.m.
