FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU softball team will host the last three-game home series of the season with the Bears of Mercer this weekend at the FGCU Softball Complex. The series will begin with a double header Saturday, April 26 at 2 p.m. and will conclude with a single game on Sunday at noon.

Children wearing green, blue or any FGCU apparel will be admitted to the games free of charge.

Prior to Sunday’s game, seniors Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, Fla./ North Fort Myers High School), Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School), Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero High School), Regan Knapik (Land O’Lakes, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch High School), Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver High School), Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony High School), Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice High School) and Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake High School) will be honored for their time with the Eagles in a Senior Day ceremony.  The eight seniors hold an overall record of 133-88-1 through four years with a mark of 55-27 in conference play.  The group earned an Atlantic Sun Championship and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2012. 

The Eagles are 28-21-1 on the season after sweeping the three-game series against North Florida last weekend and hold an 11-10 record in A-Sun Conference play. The Green and Blue are 24-9-1 in games played on its home field this season.  The Eagles sit in fifth place in the A-Sun standings and will secure a place in the conference tournament with two wins in their next six games.

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) has led the Eagles this season at the plate and currently tops the roster with a batting average of .441 to rank 29th in the nation and first in the conference. Carpenter holds a .970 fielding percentage in the outfield and paces the team with 42 RBI through 50 games.  She has also added nine doubles and crossed the plate 36 times to rank second in the conference with 97 total bases.  Carpenter is ranked third in the conference in slugging percentage with a .669.

Zgrabik adds an average of .357 for FGCU with 46 hits in 129 at bats.  Zgrabik leads the team with 13 homeruns and has knocked in 40 runs.  Barnes holds a batting average of .355 and ranks among the top 30 in the nation for runs per game and ranks fourth in the nation for triples and first in the conference with six.

Offensively, FGCU has a combined average of .276 and has outscored its opponents, 191-160 this year.

The FGCU pitching staff is led by junior Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe High School) as she maintains an ERA of 2.04 and holds a record of 10-5 in the circle.  Morgan has allowed just 32 earned runs through 110.0 innings of work.  Josie has also aided the pitching staff and has an ERA of 3.04 in 24 appearances.  She has started 17 games for the Eagles and has allowed 46 earned runs in 106.0 innings. 

Collectively, the Eagles hold an ERA of 2.76 and have struck out 132 batters, while holding opponents to a batting average of just .271.


The Bears are 31-17 on the season and 13-8 in Atlantic Sun play for a fourth-place standing.  Mercer recently took a double header against conference opponent Northern Kentucky in a weekend matchup last week and clinched a position in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. 

The Eagles are 9-4 in all time meetings with the Bears dating back to the 2007-08 season.  FGCU took two-of-three games against Mercer in their matchup last season.

Mercer is led by senior McKenzie Woody and sophomore Kaytlin Haney.  Woody holds a batting average of .361 with 52 hits and 36 runs for 11 RBI, with Haney maintaining a .342 batting average and has 52 hits and 32 runs for 48 RBI.

From the circle, the Bears are led by freshman Kirsten Stevens and senior Julia Rice.  Stevens has a record of 12-4 with 81 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.14.  Rice maintains a record of 9-4 with 38 strikeouts for a 3.48 ERA.

Head coach James DeFeo is in his third year as the softball coach at Mercer. He holds a record of 81-75 with the Bears.

Next Up

FGCU will travel to Kentucky in its last conference series against A-Sun foe Northern Kentucky (3-37; 1-19 A-Sun) in a three-game series next weekend.  The Eagles and the Norse will begin the matchup Saturday, May 3 with the first pitch of the series scheduled for 12 p.m.
