HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The FGCU softball team will travel to Kentucky to conclude regular season play this weekend with a three-game series against the Norse of Northern Kentucky. The series will begin Saturday, May 3 with a double header beginning at noon and will conclude Sunday with a single game at noon.

The Eagles are 28-24-1 on the season after falling to conference foe Mercer last weekend and hold an 11-13 record in the Atlantic Sun Conference play.  The team clinched the sixth seed in the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) has led the Eagles and the conference this season at the plate and currently tops the roster with a batting average of .438 to rank 29th in the nation and first in the conference.  Carpenter holds a .973 fielding percentage in the outfield and leads the team with nine home runs and 43 RBI through 53 games.  Carpenter has also added nine doubles and crossed the plate 38 times and ranks second in the conference with 103 total bases.  Carpenter is also ranked third in the conference in slugging percentage with a mark of .673.

Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice High School) adds an average of .341 for FGCU with 47 hits in 138 at bats.  Zgrabik leads the team with 13 hits over the fence and has knocked in 40 runs.  Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) holds a batting average of .352 and ranks among the top 30 in the nation for runs per game and ranks fourth in the nation and first in the conference with six triples on the year.

Offensively, FGCU has a combined average of .269 and has outscored its opponents, 194-175.

The FGCU pitching staff is led by junior Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe High School) as she maintains an ERA of 2.16 and holds a record of 11-7 in the circle.  Morgan has allowed just 38 earned runs through 123.0 innings of work. 

Freshman Taylor Wade (Pace, Fla./Pace High School) has an ERA of 3.16 in 18 appearances.   She has started six games for the Eagles and has allowed 25 earned runs in 55.1 innings.

The pitching staff holds a collective ERA of 2.86 and has struck out 138 batters and held opponents to a batting average of just 2.74.


The Norse are 5-42 on the season and 1-22 in Atlantic Sun play after dropping a three-game series to Lipscomb but splitting a conference double header with Morehead State on Wednesday.

The Eagles are 3-0 in all time meetings with the Norse dating back to the 2013 season when NKU joined the conference.  In last year’s series, the Eagles earned marginal wins at 2-0, 4-3 and 2-1.  Two of the three games went into extra innings with the Eagles prevailing on both occasions.  The extra-innings wins came at the hands of Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Louie Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School).  Garabedian hit a two-run homerun to end game one, while Ross used an RBI single in the third game of the series to complete the sweep for FGCU.

Northern Kentucky is led by senior Dee Dee Davis and junior Katelyn Roy.  Davis holds a batting average of .265 and has 35 hits, 13 runs and six home runs with 20 RBI. Roy maintains a .235 batting average and has 27 hits, seven runs and four home runs with 21 RBI.

From the circle the Norse are led by freshmen Alyssa Enrique and Paige McQueen.  Enrique has a record of 3-13 with 41 strikeouts and an ERA of 7.14.  McQueen maintains a record of 1-5 with 10 strikeouts for and a 8.91 ERA.

Head coach Kathy Stewart is in her 16th year as the softball coach at NKU.

FGCU will prepare for the 2014 Atlantic Sun Tournament as they will travel to Nashville, Tenn. following the series at NKU.  The Eagles are ranked sixth in the conference entering tournament play and will face Stetson on Wednesday, May 7 at 3 p.m.
