LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After a successful 2014 season and an impressive Atlantic Sun Tournament run, two members of the FGCU softball team were honored with National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association regional awards.  Junior Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) and senior Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice High School) both earned a position on the NFCA All-South Region Third Team, as announced by the organization on Thursday.

“I am extremely proud of Kelsey and Chelsea and they should be proud of themselves,” said head coach David Deiros.  “They worked extremely hard this season and it is a tremendous honor to be recognized as some of the best in our region.”

Carpenter led the team this year both on and off the field.  The junior exercise science and pre-physical therapy major holds a cumulative grade point average of 3.95 after earning a 4.0 in the spring semester, while leading the conference with a batting average of .432.  She recorded 10 doubles and 10 home runs with 76 hits on the year and held a slugging percentage of .670.  She also collected 24 walks on the year for an on-base percentage of .505.

The left fielder topped the league in average, hits and on-base percentage and ranked among the top five in runs batted in, total bases and slugging percentage to earn a position on the All-Conference First Team.  She also ranked in the top-10 in runs scored and home runs.  Carpenter started all 60 games in the outfield this season with an impressive fielding percentage of .976.  The regional award is Carpenter’s second straight as she earned second team distinction as a sophomore.

Zgrabik out-performed her average of .329 from the 2013 season with a batting average of .342 in 60 games this season.  She hit 14 home runs, including a solo shot against Mercer in the Atlantic Sun Championship semifinal and knocked in 44 runs, while crossing the plate 27 times.  The team’s primary catcher maintained a fielding percentage of .982 with just three errors this season and ranked among the league’s top five in on-base percentage, home runs and walks.

Academically, Zgrabik graduated with a degree in psychology with a sociology minor and finished her career with a cumulative grade point average of 3.35. For her academic success, she was named a finalist for FGCU’s Eagle Scholar Athlete award, the university’s highest recognition for a graduating senior student-athlete.

With three years as a member of the Green and Blue, Zgrabik was named to the All-South team in three-consecutive seasons.  She earned second-team honors as a sophomore and was named to the first team after being named the Atlantic Sun Co-Player of the Year as a junior.

The NFCA All-South Region team features 38 student-athletes from 16 NCAA Division I teams.  The University of Alabama and Texas A&M each saw five athletes earn the distinction, while LSU, Arkansas earned three positions each.  Atlantic Sun Conference Champion Stetson saw two members earn the accolade with Tournament MVP Meredith Owen named as the First-Team Utility Player/Pitcher and second baseman Demi Meza earning Third-Team distinction.

The NFCA awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s 10 regions with first, second and third teams selected for each region. The all-region teams were voted on by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2014 NFCA Division I All-American teams.

Three programs had all eight of their nominated players earn all-region accolades:  No. 10 Arizona, No. 12 Oklahoma and Hofstra. No. 1 Oregon, No. 7 Georgia, No. 13 Michigan and No. 20 Notre Dame followed closely behind with seven selections each, while No. 2 UCLA, No. 4 Arizona State, No. 6 Florida, No. 8 Washington, No. 18 Tulsa, Wisconsin and Purdue all picked up six nods. The eight-ranked Huskies and the 20th-rated Fighting Irish both reaped five first-team choices to guide the list in that category.

The 2014 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at approximately 5 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 28, via NFCA.org.
