Tom Thompson offers a wealth of experience entering his ninth season as FGCU’s assistant softball coach with more than 10 years of coaching knowledge.
Thompson works primarily with the Eagles’ pitching staff, helping the Eagles amass an overall record of 270-95 in six years. Most recently he saw Catherine McDaniel earn an A-Sun All-Conference second team nod after going 9-1 in conference play. McDaniel also earned All-South Region first team honors after posting a 22-1 record in 2009.
Thompson developed two 29-game winners (Dana Frantz and Rachael Edinger) in 2007, which led to the fifth lowest ERA in the country at 1.11. Under Thompson’s direction, Edinger was named the 2006 Division II Independent Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) Pitcher of the Year. Edinger also holds the program’s record for career wins with 75 and shutouts (29) while holding FGCU’s second-best career ERA at 1.29.
Prior to FGCU, he spent eight years as the assistant softball coach at Lely High School in Naples under coach David Deiros. In addition, Thompson was also the head coach of the Tropic Wave U16 and U18 travel softball teams from 1996 to 2003.
He graduated from the University of Evansville with a bachelor of science degree in management. While at Evansville, he also played on the golf team.
Thompson and his wife Beth reside in Naples, Fla. They have two daughters, Jennifer of Naples and Betsy of Charlotte, N.C.
