Sand Volleyball Drops a Pair in Siesta Key

SIESTA KEY, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast sand volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches, falling to No. 3 Florida State 5-0 and Tulane 5-0 in dual action on Day 1 of the Fiesta on Siesta.

The Eagles fell to 4-8 overall on the season.

In the first match of the afternoon the No.3 Seminoles defeated FGCU 5-0. The duo of junior Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) and sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) fell in three sets while the other duos for the Green and Blue lost in two sets.

Three of Tulane's five wins against FGCU came in straight sets as Elysa Jackson and Courtney Liddle teamed to down Holm and Masters 21-19, 21-14 on Court 2, Grace Weaver and Anna Wruck combined to sweep senior Lindsey Childs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Plantation HS) and sophomore Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) 21-18, 21-19 in No. 3 action, and Azarri Badawi and Jackie Wegner joined forces to defeat sophomore Liga Strautniece (Riga, Latvia/Rigas Anglu Gimmazija) and junior Christine Pinder (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS/Houston/Central Florida CC) 21-13, 22-20 in No. 4 play.

Seniors Brooke Kohler (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS/Clemson) and Brittany Muse (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) took down Tulane's No. 1 tandem of Sophie Asprey and Cori Martone in the first set, 21-15, but dropped the next two 21-10 and 15-13. Mackenzie Moore and Olivia Utt sandwiched 21-14 and 15-8 wins around a 23-21 second-set loss to sophomores Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) and Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) to complete the sweep.

Head coach Dave Nichols and the Eagles will return to the sand in the upcoming A-Sun Sand Volleyball Championship, April 20-21, in Jacksonville at the JU Beach Volleyball Complex. The Green and Blue, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, will compete with the four other A-Sun teams to be the A-Sun representative and the first conference champion to receive an automatic bid to the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship.
