FGCU Picks up Fourth Consecutive Victory with 3-2 Win Over Tulane

Siesta Key, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast sand volleyball team defeated Conference USA foe Tulane (1-9), 3-2, in a neutral site match in Siesta Key.

The Eagles (4-3) have now won four consecutive matches, while the Green Wave how now lost four straight.

FGCU’s No. 4 squad, Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) and Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS), made quick work of the opposition, winning in straight sets (21-18, 21-11) to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Tulane tied the match at 1-1 after Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and Lindsey Childs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Plantation HS) dropped their match (21-15, 17-21, 8-15).

Karina Mambuca (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS) and Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) who played in the No. 2 spot, fell in three sets (18-21, 21-15, 11-15), while the No. 3 pairing of Brooke Kohler (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS/Clemson) and Brittany Muse (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) tied the match at 2-2 by picking up a three set victory (21-14, 20-22, 15-8).

Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) and Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall), FGCU’s No. 1 squad, gave the Green and Blue a 3-2 victory after they won in straight sets (21-13, 21-17).

The Eagles conclude the regular season Saturday at the Fiesta on Siesta Key tournament in Siesta Key, Fla. FGCU will be one of eight varsity sand squads in the field, joining College of Charleston, Florida Atlantic, Florida State, Stetson, Jacksonville, Tulane and Webber International as well as future sand competitors FIU and Louisiana-Monroe. Also slated to compete are Ave Maria, Florida, Florida Christian, Miami (Fla.), Pasco Hernando CC, Saint Leo, South Florida CC, St. Catherine, St. Petersburg, State College of Florida, UCF, Union and USF.
