FORT MYERS, Fla. - Two FGCU sand volleyball student-athletes earned postseason honors from the Atlantic Sun Conference, the league announced on Thursday afternoon.
The duo of junior Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) and sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) earned A-Sun All-Conference honors. Masters was also earned an Academic All-Conference selection.
Holm and Masters earned the all-conference selection after going 4-4 in their matches during conference play at both the 1 and 2 slots. They had the best record of any of FGCU's pairs.
Jacksonville University's No. 1 pair of Sammie Strausbaugh and Taylor Nyquist were selected as the A-Sun Sand Volleyball Pair of the Year, highlighting the postseason awards that also included JU’s Gabriela Roman winning A-Sun Sand Volleyball Freshman of the Year and Strausbaugh taking the A-Sun Sand Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Masters and Holm were joined by Stetson’s Julie Bassett/Kaley Melville and Alisha Hoffman/Catherine Coston on the All-Conference Team. Also selected were defending A-Sun Pair of the Year Anna Budinska and Dagnija Medina from North Florida and JU’s No. 1 duo of Strausbaugh and Nyquist.
North Florida Head Coach Steve Loeswick claimed his second Coach of the Year award, leading the Ospreys to an Atlantic Sun Championship in 2012 and the prorgrams' first regular season title in 2013.
Head coach Dave Nichols and the Eagles will return to the sand in the upcoming A-Sun Sand Volleyball Championship, April 20-21, in Jacksonville at the JU Beach Volleyball Complex. The Green and Blue, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, will compete with the four other A-Sun teams to be the A-Sun representative and the first conference champion to receive an automatic bid to the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship.
