DeLAND, Fla. - In its first Atlantic Sun matches of the year, the FGCU sand volleyball team was unable to capture a victory. Competing against Jacksonville University and Stetson University at the Stetson sand volleyball courts, the Eagles fell 1-4 and 0-5, respectively to drop to 1-4 on the season.
Against JU, the Eagles single victory on the day was earned by no. 4 pair Shelby Joslin (Alva, Fla./Evangelical Christian High School) and Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River High School). The two claimed a victory in the first game, winning with a score of 21-17, but then fell to JU in the second game with a score of 10-21. They then battled back in the third game to win 15-9. Against Stetson, the pair lost the match 15-21 and 18-21.
The no. 3 match of Vanessa Benke (Toledo, Brazil/College of Central Florida) and Elenora Kazarian (Tibilisi, Georgia/College of Central Florida) against JU went into a third game, but the pair was unable to pull out a win, dropping a close third set with the score of 14-16. The scores of the games were 21-14, 18-21 and 14-16. The duo had the same amount of trouble as the rest of the team, going 11-21 and 15-21 in the loss against Stetson.
No. 1 pair Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers High School/Marshall) and junior Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani High School) went 0-2 for the day. The pair went 14-21 and 17-21 in the loss against Jacksonville. Against Stetson, the duo lost the first game 19-21, but then came back in the second game to win 21-15. A hard fought 14-16 third match left the Eagles with final loss of the day.
Caroline Jordan (Orlando, Fla./William R. Boone High School) and Karina Mambuca (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast High School) at the no. 2 spot also went 0-2 for the day. The scores for the duo against the Dolphins were 14-21 and 16-21. Against the Hatters, the pair lost 14-21 and 17-21.
At no. 5, Marlene Moeller (Ludinghausen, Germany/Pascal Gymnasium) and Madi Wilcox (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein High School) lost 16-21, 12-21 and 16-21, 14-21 against JU and Stetson respectively. The scores of the no. 6 match with Ashley Baker (Estero, Fla./Estero High School) and Katie Gutmann (Coconut Creek, Fla./Monarch High School) were 15-21, 18-21 and 13-21, 16-21.
Play for the Eagles continues tomorrow in Stetson with a 9 a.m. start against Jacksonville and then will play Stetson at 11 a.m.
